After the repeated losses at the hands of ZAFT, the Earth Alliance needed to reverse ZAFT’s growing momentum in the war. To this end, the Alliance decided to launch a deep strike on the PLANT homeland, to force ZAFT on the defensive and push their priority back to Lagrange point 5. On April C.E.70, Earth Alliance launched 2 full-strength fleets, the 5th and 6th fleets, from Ptolemaeus base on the Moon and headed toward Lagrange Point 5. The battle that ensued resulted in the defeat of the Earth Alliance’s 5th and 6th fleets. The 5th fleet suffered particularly devastating losses, spending most of the remaining war rebuilding itself.
