Between June and August, national park officials from across the country flagged signs, brochures, exhibits and more for review by the Trump administration as it seeks to edit the history of America’s public lands. Materials on the chopping block include those that display “improper partisan ideology,” “a false reconstruction of American history,” or anything that “inappropriately disparages Americans” or “emphasizes matters unrelated to the beauty, abundance, or grandeur” of parks’ natural features.
Though information about the Civil War, Black and Indigenous history and climate change were targeted extensively, those weren’t the only topics called into question.
SFGATE reviewed a database with hundreds of materials that employees sent to National Park Service leadership over the summer. An anonymous group that described themselves as “civil servants on the front lines” leaked the material, along with detailed information on how the review process is being carried out internally.
“This data belongs to the American people, who need to know what is being done in their name,” reads a website created by the group. The Washington Post first reviewed and confirmed the authenticity of the internal government database.
Among the most unusual of the flagged documents: photos of signs about nude sunbathing in Florida...
