Indonesia is a deeply religious and conservative country where just going topless on the beach can result in a fine. Which is why the rise of Bali’s clothing-optional resorts feels so unexpected.
In the past I've visited nude beaches and skinny-dipped with friends. But there’s a big difference between briefly taking your clothes off at a beach and being naked around complete strangers for several days.
I arrived at the nude resort carrying the same insecurities that most of us do. I'm no fitness model, I’m middle aged with a dad bod, losing hair where I wish it would stay and growing hair where I wish it wouldn’t.
How would I go living completely nude with other strangers for five days?
Ker started the Bali Natur resort in 2023 after a slowdown in tourism during the Covid lockdowns.
“We opened in 2012 as a normal guest house, then we changed the concept during Covid,” she said.
“As there was so much competition for accommodation, and we love the naturist concept we decided to change.”
Ker says that growing up in a poor farming family clothing was not always a priority.
“We were so poor even buying clothes was difficult, so nudity was quite common at home and in the field,” she said.
“My family was always nearly naked at home, so nudity is not a big deal for me or my family, who all now work here.”...
