Starmer resigns: Which European country has highest turnover of leaders?

With resignation of #Starmer, #UK is to have its 7th PM in 10 years

A far cry from a country once touted for its ability to produce stable and long-lasting #governments compared to other #European nations, due to its first-past-the-post voting system, the principle of #parliamentary #sovereignty and its evolutionary tradition of governance.

Does the UK really have the highest prime minister turnover in Europe?

The resignation of Keir Starmer means that the UK, a European country once known for its ability to return stable governments, will see its seventh prime minister since 2016. Social media users claim this is the highest rate on the continent. Is this true? #TheCube

1. In the 2004 NHL Eastern Conference Finals, Tampa Bay won four games, vs. three for New Jersey; but overall the Devils outscored the Lightning, 23 to 21. Is it unfair that Tampa Bay won the series? No, because we decide the victor of an NHL playoff series based on the number of games won, not the number of goals. Similarly, it's not unfair when the Liberals win more seats despite the #CPC winning more votes; it's just how the rules work.

@markgrieveson I think the tendency to give majority government power and responsibility to the party that wins the most votes is one of the virtues of #FPTP; it's a feature, not a bug.

Thanks for sharing the link. I respect Mr. Coyne, and I've read him make arguments in favour of PR before. I'll watch the try to video when I have time.

@benroyce @UnassumingKiwiReborn #proportionalrepresentation like we in the #Netherlands have, look at the #Dutch electoral system and at #FPTP and try to come up with something that works good enough. (You cant have a perfect voting system because of math)

Time for #electoralreform to #proportionalrepresentation, as #FirstPastThePost is only resulting in precisely the #instability and chaos it's supposed to protect us from.

Time to face a few facts about Brexit and FPTP

Political instability is now a constant in the UK

Martin Odoni

"No UK prime minister has served a full term since David Cameron", writes #BenQuinn in #TheGuardian https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jun/22/keir-starmer-quits-prime-minister-what-will-happen-next-uk-politics-explained

Quinn's article is not analysis, but it's a valuable survey.

My takeaway is how the case for #FPTP voting has collapsed. It used to be a stabiliser: heavily-rewarded winners got a safe majority to govern.

But that no longer works. Big majority govts now implode rapidly and spectacularly.

Time for #STV, to create a representative parliament.

... Our system of #electing #MPs, #FPTP, means national outcomes often bear little relation to how people actually #vote

- In 2024, #Labour’s 34% vote share translated into two-thirds of the seats. But that massive #majority hasn’t lent stability, because #stability comes from popular support.

Keir Starmer’s resignation is the latest product of the chaos of First Past the Post

Today Keir Starmer announced he will be resigning as Prime Minister. It is hard to overstate how remarkable that is. His government won 63% of all MPs on just 34% of the vote in 2024, gi

Starmer’s resignation is latest product of the #chaos of First Past the Post (FPTP)

#Starmer’s #resignation should be a moment of reckoning. It is finally time to ask the tough questions about how we choose our #leaders, and how we choose the system that chooses them.

It would be easy to blame individual leaders. Whilst that inevitably plays a part, the #instability we are living through runs deeper than who occupies Number 10...

@therightarticle I live in one of the safest Conservative seats in the country. I am forced to vote tactically by #FPTP.
@neufena @ZackPolanski He's a fool, then. Under #FPTP, #Reform could secure 245-378 #Commons #seats on the basis of just 27% of the vote (see: https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/prediction_main.html).
