Now autumn arrives, wrapping the world in crisp air and amber light. Conkers thud satisfyingly to the ground still slick from their spiky shell and thrown into pockets, sticks are wielded like swords and puddles and leaf piles become irresistible playgrounds. The stream runs cold and clear, edged with moss and the scent of damp bark. Fallen leaves - crisp, curled and copper-toned - carpet the paths, rustling under boots and wellies. Shop windows shift with the season too, dressed in amber tones, pumpkins and lanterns, mirroring the beauty outside. Family walks are 'encouraged' to keep screens away but before long, tiny hands are busy collecting acorns and treasures from the woods. Laughter (and whinging) mingles with the crunch of leaves, the splash of puddles and the quiet joy of autumn’s little wonders 🍁"

An ear-flappingly good walk up the bluff.

What a difference a day makes.

Thursday: torrential rain for a trip to Liverpool and a short walk along the wind-whipped Mersey.

Friday: rich winter sun for another instalment of our Dales Way walk – this time from Bolton Abbey to Burnsall.

Under the canal and into the woods that cling to the mountain. We climbed straight up the old tramroad, then zig-zagged back down along forgotten tracks.

“If you could have been here 200 years ago,” says the information board by the canal, “you would have seen a whole mountainside alive with the activities that made Wales the world’s first industrial nation.”

It must have been quite a sight.

Having completed the link from central Leeds in sections over the years, we ticked off the first part of the Dales Way proper with a stomp between Ilkley and Bolton Abbey.

A wet summer has swelled the River Wharfe. It boiled against its banks as we walked beside it, while the grey skies above threatened another deluge. But the rain never came and we arrived in Bolton Abbey largely dry to reward our effort with tea and cake.
