I know that I’m rather biased but Liverpool never ceases to delight and amaze me. I’d never heard of the Liverpool Olympia before until my other half asked me if I knew it and showed me a photo of it last week. So this weekend, we decided to have a wander out of the city centre and take a look for ourselves.
Despite having seen a photo I wasn’t quite prepared for this magnificent building with its old name “Mecca Locarno” carved in sandstone across the front - clearly from the days when people commissioning buildings thought they’d own them forever! (Note : Mecca had a whole chain of theatres all called “Mecca Locarno” across the UK)
I was even more delighted to find that this is a Frank Matcham designed theatre as not that many of his still remain (London Hippodrome and Blackpool Grand Theatre are two of them) and of course now I want to try and get a tour of the inside (in full light rather than during an event) to have a personal look as the shots I’ve seen online look interesting and Matcham typically did stunning interiors!
Note : you’ll see from the illustration in the linked Wikipedia article and compared to today that not all of the building remains)
Right next door to this are “The Grafton Rooms” which I had heard of mostly because my auntie used to go dancing there every Saturday night and sometimes went with my Dad when they were dating (she was his widowed sister in law - this isn’t the Deep South of the US! 😉) but I never really knew where it was. This building is a mess and scheduled for demolition but the front of it will be preserved.
It was lovely day of exploration and I shall post a few more of other discoveries over the next few days.
