OK..news from the "involuntary admin" front.

Infos I had from my partners mother:

"I can do nothing on my laptop any more. There's always a message 'no permission' when I try X or Y. And it said deleting cookies may help so I tried. But something went wrong and I was afraid to continue"

What I saw when I checked the laptop:

- Firefox icon in task bar and desktop blank
- Chrome icon in task bar and desktop blank
- Virus scanner icon in task bar and desktop blank
- All 3 programs didn't start although OS said they are installed

What they saw in my face:

"How the bloody hell..... wtf.. ??"

It took me 50 minutes to reinstall the 3 programs on her 2 core 4GB Win8.1 machine while the 5400rpm HDD swapped for its life.
And another 20 minutes to make her Gmail account accessible again without her remembering the password and not having a recovery mail set.

You know.. Time is my most precious resource. And just because someone doesn't care about how long a laptop needs to start a webbrowser because he/she can do the dishes in the meantime and therefore don't wants to buy new hardware doesn't mean that I feel the same while fixing other peoples problems.

So..to all customers of FamilyAdmin Inc. who might read this:

From this moment on my willingness to help you out depends on your hardware.

@eternaltyro @signalapp @hetzner Last time I looked, #XMPP #MUC had rather evolved group ownership and sort-of moderation features. I'm not sure about the evolution of multi device suppport together with #OMEMO. I think that one was a bit lacking last time. With #conversations_im there is a really polished UX available that likely rivals what #Threema and #Signal offer.

I haven't tracked the state of the XMPP desktop clients, but I guess your mom isn't using any of Signal desktop client and rather just her phone. In general, I've seen all sorts of people get used to all sorts of technical shenanigans, especially if supported by the friendly #familyadmin, if a need is perceived.

But sure, as you say, XMPP ain't Whatsapp (anymore).
Basic point: No real need to sell the alternatives short in times when the primary services aren't available.

Coming from some calmer days into new year, I am thinking about re-patching our home network, simplifying a few things (wcgw?).

In that context, I‘d like to use a mini rack like the UniFi „Toolless Mini Rack“ to be placed in my office space for easier access and overview.

Does anyone have experience with it or has similar suggestions of other vendors?

Network is UniFi-dominated and would basically fit the size of the UniFi rack (mostly fanless except for some components that generate minimal noise).

I appreciate all insights from experienced SoHo admins on a budget :-).

I was recently confronted with how fragile existence can be. This made me think about all the services I host for my family. I love #selfhosting but I am the only one who can manage this. Since then I have been creating backup admin accounts to services and hosts. But even with them it will be impossible to manage becaus no one has the expertise.

I wonder if there are solutions for this out there. Does anyone know about something like this?

Ich wollte fest behaupten, dass viele  #Android Nutzer technisch affin sind und mit den Entwickler-Tools und der Kommandozeile/dem Terminal 👨‍💻 umgehen können. Aber dann hob ich meinen Kopf und wurde belehrt: Es grüsst der #FamilyAdmin 😜
