The collision late Sunday killed the pilot and copilot, who were both based out of Canada. Authorities say around 40 passengers and crew members aboard the flight were hospitalized, some with serious injuries. Two Port Authority employees who were traveling in the fire truck also were injured. The flight originated at Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. A statement by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the accident happened around 11:40 p.m. Jazz Aviation operated the flight on behalf of Air Canada.

The #FAA issued a ground stop for all planes at the airport until 0530 GMT, acc/to a notice from the regulator.
The FAA notice showed that the reason for the halt at the airport was an emergency & there was a high probability of an extension, w/o specifying any details.
In a separate notice to airmen, the FAA said that the airport could be shut until 1800 GMT.
