Il Fatto Quotidiano: 2 giugno, Ilaria Salis contro la parata militare: “Da abolire”. E Meloni risponde

Mentre né Elly Schlein né Giuseppe Conte (ma neppure il ministro Matteo Salvini) sono andati alla parata militare del 2 giugno, l’eurodeputata Avs Ilaria Salis è intervenuta per lanciare una proposta provocatoria: abolire la sfilata delle forze armate per “restituire alla Festa della Repubblica il suo originario carattere civile, popolare e democratico”, ha scritto su X. “In un’epoca pericolosamente segnata da riarmo, militarismo e guerre sempre più vicine, servirebbe il coraggio di compiere una scelta forte e controcorrente”. E per rispondere alla parlamentare, nota per essere stata incarcerata in Ungheria con l’accusa di aggressione durante uno scontro con un gruppo neonazista, è intervenuta la stessa presidente del Consiglio, seguita dal presidente leghista della Camera Lorenzo Fontana.
Una proposta inaccettabile per la maggioranza di governo. Tanto da spingere la premier a un intervento pubblico: “Reputo queste dichiarazioni”, ha scritto Meloni, “non solo vergognose, ma anche indegne verso i tanti uomini e donne in divisa che ogni giorno servono l’Italia con disciplina, onore e spirito di sacrificio”. Per Meloni “la Festa della Repubblica e la parata non celebrano soltanto una ricorrenza istituzionale”, ma “l’identità della Nazione, il senso dello Stato e il valore di chi quello Stato lo difende, lo rappresenta e lo onora. Disprezzare tutto questo da ruoli istituzionali significa non aver capito nulla della nostra storia, della Repubblica e del dovere che si ha verso di essa”. Stessa linea tenuta dal leghista Fontana, nonostante l’assenza del suo leader: “Penso”, ha detto su Rete4, “che i ragazzi delle Forze dell’ordine e delle Forze armate ci garantiscano la sicurezza, la libertà e la democrazia: sono essenziali per la sopravvivenza del Paese e di questi valori. È quindi credo che sia fondamentale invece ringraziarli per il fatto che ci sono, che ci garantiscono questi valori, che ci permettono di vivere in un paese libero”.

While neither Elly Schlein nor Giuseppe Conte (nor even Minister Matteo Salvini) went to the military parade on June 2nd, Euros Deputy Ilaria Salis intervened to launch a provocative proposal: to abolish the military parade for “to return to the Republic Day its original civil, popular, and democratic character,” she wrote on X. “In a dangerously marked era by rearmament, militarism, and increasingly close wars, it would take courage to make a strong and counter-current choice.” And to respond to the parliamentarian, known for having been imprisoned in Hungary on charges of assault during a confrontation with a neo-Nazi group, intervened the same Prime Minister, followed by the League leader of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana.

A proposal unacceptable for the government majority. So much so that the Prime Minister went on a public intervention: “I consider these statements,” wrote Meloni, “not only shameful, but also unworthy of the many men and women in uniform who every day serve Italy with discipline, honor, and the spirit of sacrifice.” For Meloni, “Republic Day and the parade do not only celebrate an institutional commemoration,” but “the identity of the Nation, the sense of the State, and the value of those who defend, represent, and honor that State. Disrespecting all of this from institutional roles means having understood nothing of our history, of the Republic, and of the duty one has towards it.” The same line was taken by the League’s Fontana, despite the absence of its leader: “I think,” he said on Rete4, “that the young people in the Police and Armed Forces guarantee us security, freedom, and democracy: they are essential for the survival of the country and of these values. It is therefore my belief that it is fundamental to thank them for being there, for guaranteeing us these values, and for allowing us to live in a free country.”

We defend the free sovereignty of the Italian people, to whom we send the highest salute and believe we reclaim their dignity, asking for the postponement of the elections tainted by violence to the Electoral Board.” This was May 30, 1924, when Giacomo Matteotti concluded his speech in the Chamber to denounce the fraud and violence that accompanied the April 6 elections.

Words that the secretary of the Unified Socialist Party commented on immediately afterward with that phrase, “I have made my speech, now you prepare the funeral speech for me,” which foreshadowed the ambush by the fascist squad that killed him on June 10. Today, the name of Giacomo Matteotti is inscribed on the seat that the deputy occupied on the day of that speech.

A solemn ceremony, opened by the words of the President of the Chamber, Lorenzo Fontana – “those words still resonate today as a heartfelt appeal in defense of freedom against any authoritarian drift,” he notes – and culminated in the unveiling of the inscription on the back of the seat and the plaque that, on the seat, reads: “From this bench the socialist deputy Giacomo Matteotti delivered the historic speech of May 30, 1924 in defense of the free Parliament and against the intimidation and violence of fascism which cost him his life.” The moment was greeted first by a minute of silence requested by Fontana from the Chamber, and then by the applause of the assembly on its feet.

Fontana: “Further due homage of the Chamber to memory”

“102 years have passed since the murder of Deputy Giacomo Matteotti. It seems like a distant time, but his memory remains alive. The Chamber of Deputies pays a further and deserved tribute to his memory, in remembrance of his famous speech delivered in this Chamber on May 30, 1924, which cost him his life. It does this with a plaque affixed now to his seat, in implementation of the motion presented by colleague Dori on the occasion of the approval of the Chamber’s internal budget and unanimously adopted by the Presidency Office. Those words still resonate today as a heartfelt appeal in defense of freedom against any authoritarian drift.”

It is the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, who says this on the occasion of the commemoration of Giacomo Matteotti, with the unveiling of a plaque on his seat. Fontana also adds that “Matteotti that day did not only denounce the fraud and abuses of the April 1924 elections. He did much more. He openly exposed the climate of intimidation, aggression and abuse perpetrated by fascism to stifle any dissenting voice. Matteotti was among the first to clearly understand the serious threat looming over democratic institutions and civil and political freedoms. He identified in squadrismo the armed wing of a ruthless regime that prevented the free expression of popular sovereignty. And he openly accused the Mussolini government of founding its consent on the systematic use of violence.”

“The tragic outcome of this affair – he adds still – is clearly etched in the collective memory of our country. And it reminds us that the sacrifice of courageous men like Giacomo Matteotti was not in vain. Thanks to their tenacity and moral intransigence, we owe the rebirth of Italy after the long twenty-year dictatorship. The democratic society of our days is the daughter of the courageous choices of those who preceded us. Reflecting on such dark pages of our history, a century distant, is not a simple commemorative exercise.” “It is a call to safeguard those inviolable values of justice, freedom and human dignity that nourish the roots of our civil coexistence,” concludes Fontana.
