Commodore 64 Helps Revive The BBS Days

Before the modern Internet existed, there were still plenty of ways of connecting with other computer users “online”, although many of them might seem completely foreign to those of us …

One day in the mid-90s, my phone rang, and when I answered, the voice on the other end said, "Hello. This is the information superhighway calling."

I held the receiver out in front of me and stared at it, wondering if I was dreaming. #EarlyInternet #90s #InformationSuperHighway

Some 38% of webpages that existed in 2013 are no longer accessible, not the stuff invented with the birth of the world wide web in the late 1980s, 2013 for flip sale. An interesting stroll down memory lane.

My journey to the heart of the forgotten internet

Slowly but surely, huge swaths of the internet are vanishing. But the artefacts of the early web are still out there, and they have lessons for the future.

Early internet in the early-mid 80s? There was a Dial up modem, I remember the sound. I remember hopping on to send a message probably to one. Of my mom's friends. She was a quadriplegic in Santa Cruz, CA, given a computer and dial-up access to the Internet or whatever it was called back then.
I always wondered why there was an ominous message upon booting up the computer, and I have no idea who or why it was there.... But it was something like:
"You are under the surveillance J. Edgar Hoover."
Was that early computer tech humor? She and her caregiver were not tech savvy but the did use it to communicate with other friends. Maybe there was a test program for disabled folks and Internet connection back then?

1/3 - @internetarchive I miss being a kid on mIRC. Before what most people today classify as social media, before ICQ, MSN Messenger, FrontPage 98, StarCraft, RuneScape, Napster, BitTorrent, or Stack Overflow. I was a kid fresh out of BBS discovering the “Information Superhighway” on a dial-up connection.

@kubikpixel Flashback to nineties "webrings" before there were good search engines and links from one website to another were often the best way to find new interesting sites. Even the use of badges are 100% in line with the 1990s esthetic. #1990s #webring #earlyInternet
