Dave Slusher - Tech StuffHere is a thing I've never heard #EV people talk about: extension cords. Possibly this is because it is a fraught topic. When I was buying the NACS->CCS adapter for my #Audi #etron from A2Z I also purchased a 12' J-1772 extension cord. It wasn't cheap, about $200. However, it already is making things better.
We stayed at an airbnb in Charlotte NC and one of the selling points was a charger at the house. It had a crazy long cord, probably 20' and it meant you could reach almost the entire driveway. I have a Wallbox charger with a 12' cord but the unit sits on the wall well into the garage. The break box is on the other side of that wall and so running the 240V 40A circuit was trivial. The downside is that to charge I had to nose in close to my garage. Every so often I pulled in just short and had to move the car another foot forward to make it reach.
With this extension cord, I can back in like I do when I'm not charging and reach all the way out. My etron has a J-1772 on the right side so I can Level 2 charge either side. I can park without considering whether I need to charge or not and decide later.
The other big consideration is out in the world. It is extra work to roll it up and put the cord back in my trunk every time but I do it. One day I will want to charge at one of the free chargers they have at the library or parking lots in my small city and the spot will be ICEd. If I can get a spot within a few spaces, I'll hook up my extension cord and charge that SOB anyway! I'm honestly kind of looking forward to that happening, just for the lulz..
