Does any one have any knowledge of how #Japanese #k12 #schools do the equivalent of #ESOL (#ESL) in the USA? #JSOL, if you will.

When I was there, there really wasn't much JSOL in #Ishikawa. I think the very few non-Japanese speaking students had a special class at an elementary school once every week or two, but that was it.

My dream next job would be to work with cities and ToDoFuKen in #Japan to set up systems for identifying and supporting #EMEB students in k12 schools.

#OhioTesolConference day 2 was another great day of #k12 #ESOL #education and #AdultESOL professional development.

Great to see colleagues I've not seen since the conference last year. Great to see how people are using #GenAI and #LLMs like #ChatGPT to support #EnglishLearners and other #EMEB / #ESL students.

Also, the venue provided #coffee all day! Much appreciated.

Just published a new video on YouTube - "How to Easily Translate Google Slides".

Basically, once you set up the translate Apps Script, you can just copy / paste slides into a template file, translate them, and (if you want), copy / paste them back. Nothing super new, but easier and faster than previous (non-3rd-party extension) ways.

Full day #k12 #ProfessionalDevelopment today about #HispanicHeritage and #FamilyEngagement, mostly as they relate to supporting #EnglishLearner / #EMEB / #EL students and their families.

Was excellent, but tiring. Going to sleep well tonight.

Started an email list for #k12 #teachers in #Ohio who have questions about supporting their #EnglishLearner students. The list is "Ohio_ESOL".

Really, any teacher working with English Learner students is welcome.

#EMEB #ESL

Subbed for the last #AdultESOL class of the term yesterday. Went okay. Great students. Kind of wish I could teach the course.

Now working on some #ProfessionalDevelopment for a content area teachers at a school that experienced an influx of newcomer #EnglishLearner students. I love working with teachers to help them support their #EMEB students.

#AI is going to be a bit of a topic in my presentation. So much that #ChatGPT (and similar) can do to help teachers differentiate.

#ESL #k12

First day of HS classes tomorrow. I'm still trying to get records from previous schools!! Have a few students who I'm not sure if they are #EMEB / #EnglishLearners or not. ("Not" meaning they already placed out of services - they are definitely at least [emergent] bilingual.)

So, looking forward to talking with them tomorrow.

#AdultESOL (#AdultESL) class went well today. Only two classes left in this term. Taking a term off this summer for the first time since ... I don't remember when.

We get #k12 #ESOL assessment scores tomorrow. Can't wait to see how my students did. Also the day that some of the #EMEB students get an early start of final exams, so I may not actually have time to check the state testing results.

Can't believe only 1 week left with students this school year. Flew by.

Have to study more for #español test tomorrow.

Over 220 vocabulary words in about 5 weeks, plus grammar, verb conjugations, etc.

That's about 44 words per week. Sounds like a lot (and it is), but many #EMEB / #EnglishLearner students get that many vocabulary words every day or two, many of them academic words. Plus, you know, the grammar stuff as well.

Many USA #k12 content #Teachers need more #TESOL training.

Or, they could join the #Spanish class I'm in. Get the experience.

#ESL #ESOL

Getting started updating my website. I mostly make available #CreativeCommons licensed readings for #k12 #ESOL and #EMEB studnets / #ELs / #EnglishLearners and some other #OER resources for teachers.

Soooo many #EdTech sites have readings, some at various levels, but in my experience, they don't always consider #ELs specifically, nor do they provide decent formatting.

For example: #PhrasalVerbs and idioms can be difficult for ELs. Vocab in general. Translations are a stopgap, not a solution.
