70 hours of OG (#OrtonGillingham) #dyslexia / #reading training done. Was intense but well worth it. Finally kind-of-sort-of on summer break (but still doing #CyberSecurity class also, so ...). Going to go back and review all the materials over the next few weeks, though.

Looking forward to working with students next school year. Looking forward to doing some research on using it with #EnglishLearners, also. Seems to be a gap in the research there.

Updated the word list creator and the blending practice pages.

Also added a sound checker --- shows you which sounds you have taught but haven't included as well as (and prolly more important) any sounds your lesson plan includes that you haven't taught yet.

Sound Checker

Paste a word list or a reading passage and see which phonics sounds — digraphs, trigraphs, glued/welded sounds, blends, vowel teams — appear and which are missing, checked against what you've taught. For English Learners and young readers.

The Blending Practice and Word List Builder pages are up! They are at my #NeoCities page for now.

Working on a basic reading blending page and a word maker page (for blending and other reading activities) for my #TeachingReading #ProfessionalDevelopment classes.

Hope to have them ready and uploaded tonight. Will reply with links when they are live.

#AdultESOL finished. Have one weekend off before classes start up again at the very end of May.

#k12 school year is almost finished, but I am doing an intensive, 2-week #ReadingInstruction / #dyslexia PD at the start of summer break.

My final #CyberSecurity course starts tomorrow --- #EthicalHacking! Very excited, but also very exhausted. Love it, but looking forward to being done with CYSC courses. Unfortunately, I won't be teaching it at #HighSchool next year.

I spent about a month working with Claude Code to create a high-low book for #AdultEnglishLearners. It is about the fictional Rivera García family and should work with high school #EnglishLearners also because the family in the story includes 3 children, including one in high school.

The book is written at about a 3rd or 4th grade level.

I would very much appreciate any feedback.

La Cocina (Book #1)

Chris Spackman content for adult English Learners

I created a #HighLow (high interest, low reading level) book for adult #EnglishLearners. I plotted, directed, edited, and did some of the writing. #LLMs helped me plan, did some checking, and, yes, did a lot of the "writing".

I'm an #ESOL / #ESL #teacher. I want to provide #EducationalMaterials for my students. I want to get affordable #books into my students' hands.

Includes #AI content, so #PublicDomain / CC0.

(Book coming soon; have to get it internet ready.)

BUT, keep in mind that simplifying a text for English Learners is NOT a best practice. It is much better to enhance or otherwise mark up the original reading to make it accessible to #EnglishLearners.

That said, simplifying has its uses --- like for quickly developing background knowledge or as an introduction before reading the original version.

#education #TESOL #k12 #ESL #ESOL

I created (with Claude code's help) a page to compare two texts --- to allow teachers to see exactly how a modified reading is different from the original. Many LLMs do not do a great job of modifying texts in the ways that teachers ask for. The "Reading Modification Analyzer" compares two texts and shows helpful data on how they differ.

The analyzer is at: https://spackman-chris.neocities.org/text-compare/text-compare

As always, feedback and suggestions are most welcome.
