The tomb of Sir George Wynter and his wife at St. Peter's church, Dyrham, Gloucestershire, England. George Wynter was a C16 pirate/adventurer who profited from piracy in the West Indies where foreign ships were plundered. The proceeds of such activities , along with inherited family wealth, funded the purchase of Dyrham Park. His wife gave birth to eleven children shown in relief on the walls of this tomb.

Random shot from the archives. This is the church in the gardens of Dyrham Park, a National Trust property in South Gloucestershire. We've stayed in Weston-super-Mare a few times over the years as we're fond of British seaside locations in the UK and we paid a visit to this spot while there in 2013.

Trotters Bottom. The gates of Dyrham Park Country Club. This was known locally as 'the Jewish golf club'. I believe it accepted members of all faiths, but was set up because existing golf clubs would not knowingly accept Jews. How did they test for Jewishness? It appears to have been based largely on the name - an unreliable measure, but having the advantage of excluding many Germans as well as Jews (and others). The British self image of tolerance and openness resists overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

What I want from National Trust properties is to feel at constant risk of a timeslip incident. As if I might be about to see a ghost. Or pick up a curse. #ghosts #GhostStories #DyrhamPark
