I believe it accepted members of all faiths, but was set up because existing golf clubs would not knowingly accept Jews. How did they test for Jewishness? It appears to have been based largely on the name - an unreliable measure, but having the advantage of excluding many Germans as well as Jews (and others). The British self image of tolerance and openness resists overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
