My mum bought a new oven. Now instead of turning on the oven and setting the temperature in two swift turns, the digital display now wants you to set a timer first and you have to go through an extensive menu of "features", turning the simple 2-step act of turning on the oven to an at least 5 step annoyance where I had to decline setting a time multiple times. This is not even a "smart device".

Progress?

I'm sure there's an untapped market for "Dumb" tech. Bonus points for repairable, dumb tech.

No AI assistants, no Internet connection, no DRM or login needed.

Just a toaster that makes toast, a TV that plays only what you put in it, with repair kits, spare parts available, easy to reach guts and accessible schematics, diagrams and instructions.

I know I'd buy no other brands if just one offered that to me.

Apple, you tell me that you can't join a wifi network. Is the PSK incorrect? perhaps there's an incompatibility between the iOS device and the wap's channel distribution or...

Where's the debug log, huh? Why is Apple obsessed with treating its users like they're all technologically incompetent fools? Just give me one error code or something—anything useful with which I can solve the likely very simple problem.

The lesson here, I think, is don’t fuck with things the OS is typically responsible for unless you’re willing to ensure it’s 1:1 feature identical to what the OS does, and even then just stay inside the app unless the user asks you to #googlebeevil #dumbtech
I puzzled over it for an hour or so until I remembered: the youtube app had recently begun showing its own screensaver, rather than letting the OS take over, presumably so YouTube gets more screen time, or more data, or more ads or whatever. I think this somehow both interfered with the HDMI sense feature and the TV’s sleep mode so that the TV would turn off but never come back. #googlebeevil #dumbtech
So I have a dumb tv and an Apple TV (that I’m looking to jailbreak, if anyone has any suggestions pls let me know!) and one of the nice innovations in TVs over the last decade or so is this feature where the TV can sense HDMI inputs and turn on when you turn the peripheral on, negating the need for the tv remote if you have a set top box like I do. This works great, except this morning, where I went to turn it on and nothing happened. 1/ #googlebeevil #dumbtech

Why is it #Outlook can access my contacts on #iCloud, but my #Mac cannot?
The Contacts app on my Mac is completely empty and refuses to sync with iCloud.
Great tech you got there, Apple.

I just downloaded #Corsair iCUE software. It's 1.11GB btw, for changing my kayboard's lights. Funny thing is the installer can't do it's job without internet access. #DumbTech

Ever felt like you're not tanking your frame rates enough by pushing 4K when you could be getting playable frame rates with no discernable graphical difference at 1440p?

Never fear: Samsung have a new "two-4K-monitors-side-by-side" widescreen!

Although Slow Food was coined as a play on the phrase "fast food", which it is a reaction against. So what's the tech equivalent of fast food? Maybe "smart tech"? Maybe what we need is a Dumb Tech movement, run by smart people ;)
