10th finished book of the year:
Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross
4/5 ⭐️ - Improved on the first book, found it overall more enjoyable
I feel like I gave the first book in the 'Letters of Enchantment' duology a harsh time when I reviewed it by only judging it in isolation. Not that there's any other way to review a single book, but this second half of the pair certainly made things a little more rounded.
I still didn't really feel all that connected to the relationship between the main characters, but I felt that the shifting of perspectives between them made for a more engaging experience this time round, not least because of the shifting nature of the conflict and changed positions of them both.
I found the story moved smoothly towards the eventual conclusion, tying up all the loose ends that I would have wanted answers for fairly pleasingly, with enough epiloguing and "... later" sections to satiate that part of me that always wants to know what comes next.

9th finished book of the year:
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
3.5/5 ⭐️ - Read it quick and enjoyed it, but it felt lacking in a number of areas
I went into reading ‘Divine Rivals’ on the back of reading an awful lot of romantasy, so I suspect I may have had incorrect expectations, but while there was romance, I didn’t find that I resonated with it very much at all. As far as fantasy goes, it felt more like wartime historical fiction than fantasy and while there were dashes of magic added into the world, it didn’t feel very magical in practice.
I didn’t feel very much for the relationship between the main characters, if I’m entirely honest. It probably didn’t help that they referred to each other exclusively by their surnames for most of the book. This, combined with the very formal way they communicated, made it feel very much like they were public school kids talking, rather than working adults in a high-stakes world.
I found the plot enjoyable enough and certainly devoured it fast enough to convince myself that I liked it, but I couldn’t really put my finger on one particular thing that stood out to me as excellent. The world building was fine, but felt rushed at times, and the conversations between the FMC and her friends felt far more intimate than those between her and the MMC.
I wanted to love it, I think is the problem, having seen it recommended in a number of places, and instead found it just not quite satisfying me enough to rate it higher. If you really like historical fiction, you may find you respond to it better.

Now reading Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross.
Still wearing Christmas pajamas.
I just finished Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross. Now I have something to look forward to after Christmas with the sequel coming out on December 26!
I started #divinerivals yesterday based on the interesting story concept. It's been a unique read with hints of #friendsatthetable #marielda vibes. I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes! 📚
