New paper with Robin Angelini and Katta Spiel!

What would technologies look like if they centred around the experiences and desires of deaf people? We highlight the concept of DeafWatch as a starting point for new ways of thinking about technology from deaf-centred perspectives.

Some useful new features on iOS18, but still missing:
- Real-time speech-to-text transcription in Notes. Recording live audio is useful but feels designed more for hearing users. I need real-time transcription and so far didn't find any app that I'm really happy with.
- an option to automatically mute sound when starting FaceTime. How hard can it be?

The @cloudnativefdn Deaf and Hard of Hearing Working Group promotes inclusivity in tech by offering a level playing field.

The group empowers the deaf and hard-of-hearing community not just in the cloud sector, but also in other tech fields, the idea is that everyone should be represented from the majority, minority all the way to those who are gifted differently

Technical question about hearing loops...

What's the average range for a hearing loop? For example, would a deaf person need to be really close to wherever the microphone is?

Would e.g. a supermarket potentially need multiple hearing loop systems?

Working on an article about deaf people at the moment and want to learn as much as I can about this technology.

Wow!

"Vibrating haptic suits give deaf people a new way to feel live music

… When you wear the suit, it's surprising how much texture the sensations have. It can feel like raindrops on your shoulders, a tickle across the ribs, a thump against the lower back."

"His team started by strapping vibrating cell phone motors to bodies, but that didn't quite work. The vibrations were all the same. Eventually, they worked with engineers at the electronic components company Avnet to develop a light haptic suit with a total of 24 actuators." https://www.npr.org/2023/07/17/1186173942/vibrating-haptic-suits-give-deaf-people-a-new-way-to-feel-live-music
