Why has the equation of

encrypted and secure handheld device = criminal

become dogma among oppresive governments? A secure and encrypted laptop does not amount to criminal activity. Why should a good phone? It looks like a prejudie against form factor rather than anything substantive.

Cox's book (#404media) mentions #GrapheneOS specifically and #DarkWire concludes that criminalization has no effect on global drug trade (pg. 313).

The author does not make any claim that private and secure phones should only be the property of the military and police, which is the implication of the detractors of such projects.

There is some interesting discussion at the end about what this means for encrypted communications for non-criminals. Notice, the take down of these companies does nothing to end the drug trade. That is an important point.

If you don't want encryption for Organized Crime, why would you want it for the Gestapo? Police constantly abuse our Civil Liberties, acting in the dark with immunity. No one is going to take down their Nazi comms.
