For those asking about coming to Dare County south of Oregon Inlet: Dare County says, “A Mandatory Evacuation order for Hatteras Island remains in place. Conditions do not look favorable for reentry to begin on Saturday, August 23.”

Areas north of Oregon Inlet are open for business, and Ocracoke in Hyde County has fully reopened, too!

Hurricane Erin | Bulletin 7
A Mandatory Evacuation order remains in effect for Hatteras Island.

N.C. Hwy. 12 remains closed from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Hatteras Village due to ocean overwash. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect through midnight Saturday.

Conditions are expected to remain hazardous, especially around tonight’s 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow’s 8 a.m. high tides. As pictured here, Dare County crews are assisting NCDOT with pumping floodwater between Frisco and Hatteras (Sandy Bay) to help clear the roadway.

Based on the latest forecast, reentry is not expected to begin Saturday, Aug. 23. Officials will continue to monitor conditions and establish a staged reentry process once NCDOT can safely reopen Hwy. 12.

From Dare County Govenment on FB: Dare County damage assessment teams were deployed to Hatteras Island this morning. Post-storm damage assessment is the process of determining the severity of the damage to the community, including homes, businesses, and public infrastructure, to inform recovery efforts and decide if state or federal assistance is needed.

Dare County remains under a State of Emergency. A mandatory evacuation for Hatteras Island remains in place. A US National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect for Dare County until 12 a.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

N.C. Hwy 12 on Hatteras Island remains closed due to extensive ocean overwash. For real-time NCDOT travel information, visit DriveNC.gov/ or follow NCDOT NC 12.

While N.C. Hwy. 12 on Hatteras Island remains closed, we’ve made it past this morning’s high tide. Some vulnerable portions of N.C. Hwy. 12 are still covered with significant water and sand—especially near the north ends of Buxton and Hatteras Village (pictured).

Yesterday’s high tide breached the dunes north of Hatteras Village, causing major overwash. Deep sand, water and debris continue to cover the roadway, but NCDOT’s tireless road pros are working around the clock to clear the way.

A huge thank you to NCDOT NC 12 for their continuous efforts to restore N.C. Hwy. 12!

From Dare County Government on FB:

With all of the coverage on Hatteras Island, we've had several concerned visitors and residents reach out to inquire about the conditions on the northern beaches of Dare County.

There are currently no closed roads or breached dunes in Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head, but please remain vigilant as conditions can change quickly, especially near the oceanfront. Even with Hurricane Erin’s track offshore, significant impacts are continuing to occur.

Due to life-threatening ocean conditions—including rip currents and extremely hazardous surf and large breaking waves—double red flags are posted on all Dare County beaches by local ocean rescue agencies, indicating that no one may enter the waters of the Atlantic Ocean anywhere in Dare County.

These photos were taken in Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills this morning at approximately 8 a.m., submitted by our Department of Health & Human Services Director and Deputy County Manager Sheila Davies. The video was taken this morning at Jenette's Pier in Nags Head at approximately 8 a.m. by CURRENTtv.
