All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your faithful shall bless you.
They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and tell of your power,
to make known to all people your mighty deeds
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
—Psalm 145:10–12 NRSV

The Responsorial Psalm for the feast of St. Luke (October 18) is taken from Psalm 145.
Whenever we pray this text together as a church, I always perk up—because this is what writers, creatives, and evangelizers do!
Through our words and images, and even more, please God, through our very lives we are called to “make known the glorious splendor” of God’s presence and action in this world.
So, for all my fellow evangelizers in the communications media, as you spend time on your craft, whether that is writing or editing or playing with colors, music or spoken word, may God bless your work. May it show forth God’s grandeur.
God bless you.

I've been stationed in places where it is hard to find a Saturday morning Mass.
And I get it. People in ministry are not machines! Priests need a day off (and for anyone like me, they need at least one day to have a slow wake up morning). So for parishes with only one priest, that means once a week there is no daily Mass—and most often that's on Saturday.
But there are Saturdays when I really feel for the daily Mass-goer who has no viable options nearby.
Today is one of those days.
Sure, the faithful can (and should) pray the texts of the liturgy on their own. But there's just something about hearing today's Gospel (the Prodigal Son parable from Luke) proclaimed at Mass, and then having those images refract around in your mind and heart as you participate in the second half of the Mass and receive Communion.

I wonder if the mustard seed parable (see Luke 13:18-21) is Jesus' version of self-deprecating humor...
The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. When it is fully grown it becomes a "large bush" ... not a stately redwood tree or a robust oak, but a "bush."
And look at this picture that I downloaded from Unsplash. An azalea is more of a proper bush IMHO. Mustard just looks like a plant...
Anyhow. The point that I take is that God works amazing things in and through his disciples—but we're still a scraggly bunch—beautiful, and potently flavorful in our own ways, but still scraggly.

I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will tell of your name to my kin, alleluia.

Parishes and church groups may need programs in order to get everybody moving in the same direction. OK I get it. But evangelization is not a program. It is really quite simple. Each one of us personally and all of us together live in praise of the One who loves all of us, and who saves us. We bear witness in our words and actions to God's words and actions.
The #DailyMass readings today include the story of Susanna from book of Daniel. The lady is falsely accused of adultery by two elders in retaliation for resisting their sexual advances. At first she is condemned, because of course everyone believes guys 🧐. Thankfully Daniel intervenes and the assembly reconsiders their verdict.
I find this a hard reading to sit through. But paradoxically, I'm always relieved when the lector actually reads the whole reading. Look it is long either way -- so just read the whole thing -- it makes so much more sense.
Plus, I particularly resent the fact that the short version starts at the end of verse 41 -- by snipping out the words "Because they were elders of the people and judges, the assembly believed them and condemned her to death."
Yup.
#MeToo has been going on for a looooong time, folks...
Don't cover it up.

Jesus: "Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”

James & John: “We can.”

Mrs. Z: Yesssss!

Me: Yo, guys, I'd think twice before I signed that dotted line!

Jesus: 😉 They'll figure it out eventually.

Today's Gospel from #Matthew20 always makes me wonder whether it was the ambitious mother who wanted to see her two sons at the top of the food chain; or was it the two brothers who talked their mother into pleading their cause (since Jesus had a track record for listening to the pleas of women)?
Anyhow, these two guys have no clue what they're getting into...
Says the sister who took vows months before she reached the legal drinking age. Sure, I knew what I was getting into.. and no, I had no clue AT ALL.
My takeaway: Yes, it is dangerous to get messed up with Jesus—a very good kind of dangerous.

If you, O Lord, mark iniquities,
Lord, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness,
that you may be revered.

“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
#Luke9 #DailyMass

Suffering in its myriad forms is just part of life. You can try to deal w it on your own, or you can rage against the darkness—but where does that get you or anyone around you?
Or you can pick up your cross, unite the pain to Jesus’ wounds and so be enfolded in the mystery of his passion-death-resurrection, for, “whoever loses his life for my sake will save it” (Luke 9).

“Even now, says the Lord,
Return to me with your whole heart”
#Joel2 #DailyMass #AshWednesday

Even now—at this specific time, in these specific circumstances, whatever they may be.
Return to me—return to the deepest truth about yourself who are fashioned in the image & likeness of God.
W your whole heart—because God is the deep down source of being & without God, our hearts are not whole.

“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” #StAugustine

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.”

It is as though the liturgy is putting a shot across the bow to remind us that #Lent is coming.
