I saw Triumph of the Will and Birth of a Nation in school, but only because it was film school. I agree with Lauren; these should be more broadly seen (with appropriate context added).
I suspect that if Birth of a Nation was standard fare in American middle school, there would be a lot less mis- and dis-information about racism in America going unchallenged. Perhaps your recent electoral disaster could even have been averted.
The Germans took the right path after WWII. They decided everyone should know the whole story of their atrocious acts, even though many wanted to just leave it behind, much like the American right professes about its own history.
