A guide to bring your bicycle on trains in Hungary

The Hungarian railways MÁV deserve a special mention for providing a detailed list of all train types they operate, with for each (1) a photo gallery *including bicycle spaces* and (2) a clear mention of the number of bicycle spots. https://www.mavcsoport.hu/en/mav-szemelyszallitas/domestic-travels/vehicle-types

If only all railway operators would offer this as a baseline!

The other take-away is that ALL of these trains offer at least 1 bicycle spot, and often many more. 🚲🚂🚲🚃🚲🚄🚲 #CyclingOnRails #MAV #Hungary

Well that's unfortunate: European Sleeper is NOT planning any bicycle transport on its night trains in 2026... https://www.europeansleeper.eu/with-bike-by-night-train

Some shots of the Pendolino, Polish edition. 📸 4 bicycle spots as Pendolinos do but here it's vertical hooks. As a cyclist, you get a seat reserved next to your bicycle spot (as mentioned earlier, these are bundled together, bicycle fee is 8.10 PLN or about 2€).

Other than that I quite like the interior, feels nicer than the ones found in and around Switzerland.

@HaTetsu Oh! good to know ICs with large bicycle rooms exist(ed) at DB. The ones I saw towards Denmark, or sold to the Bulgarian railways barely had any luggage space, let alone bicycle spots. #CyclingOnRails

- Next-generation Ouigo will have 8 bicycle spots per train. A big leap forward for France! 🎉 #MonVeloDansLeTrain #CyclingOnRails
- Ouigo's CEO was surprised of the success on Paris-Bruxelles... but not planning any other #CrossBorderRail lines. I bet @jon wasn't surprised: https://jonworth.eu/make-international-rail-cheaper-capacity-on-a-route-is-the-crucial-issue/

Make international rail cheaper? Capacity on a route is the crucial issue - Jon Worth

It’s a common refrain: more people would take the train – especially on international routes – if only it were cheaper! That line of argument assumes that there are actually more trains to take. In other words that there is spare capacity. The problem is that – in many cases […]

@stefanlindbohm And there will also be a few direct Copenhagen-Hamburg-Berlin-Prague trains by ČD from next spring, using the modern ComfortJet also featured in my fresh update of today: https://cycling-on-rails.com/train-bicycle-guide/czechia/#comfortjet

All in all great progress upcoming for #CrossBorderRail #CyclingOnRails!

@HaTetsu @jon After further checking, the "low cost" class mentions "rowery ZA DARMO" i.e. bicycles FOR FREE: https://regiojet.pl/uslugi/obsluga-w-pociagu/low-cost

The fine print says you have to book in advance (no idea where, hope they'll sort this out in the trial phase) and the bicycle spots are at the end of the carriage. #CyclingOnRails #RowerWPociągu

Oh, great! The website to book bicycle spots in regional trains in France is now underbooking... I counted 12 spots in this train (AGC model in region Bretagne) but only 9 can be booked... and reservation via https://www.veloabord.fr is (officially) mandatory! 😤 #CyclingOnRails #SNCFail

@jon At least a good news is that new trainsets are coming next year 🤞 But does anyone know how many have been ordered, and if they plan to increase the frequency?

2 trains per day with no more than 2 bicycle spots in each is unforgiveable... A highway with bicycles on car racks has at least 10,000 times more capacity! #CrossBorderRail #CyclingOnRails
