it is frustrating the ever-lovin' shit out of me that I cannot come up with an affordable way to get this recumbent shipped to me. And that whether I take the risk of shipping it from the US or switch tack and get something from AZUB in Czechia (with lower weight capacity), I am going to be pushed into spending $5 - 6K more. And I hadn't crowdfunded anywhere near the old amount I needed. 😭

Weil ich es als behinderte Frau über 40 vergessen kann. Mag sein, das es annehmbare Angebote gäbe. Aber ich hab keine Kraft für die Verwaltung, ich hab keine Kraft für Prüfungen, ob ich was brauche. Es ist eh mit der gesetzlichen schon anstrengend genug.

I didn't know where I'd be living or if there'd be a shed big enough for it.

Even within the US, where it was made, there are few that will service it.

OTOH, it held my weight and was really great when it was working and it sold for less than 1/10 what I'd put into it and now anything better that takes my weight will cost at least $10K I don't have... #CripTax #BikeTooter #MoveOrBust

If you think disabled people:

Need to “try harder” to survive
Can magically find money where none exists
Are exaggerating the lack of help available
Are getting needs met by the government

The government just raised 25k to protect one of their own.

Why did they do this?

Because they KNOW disabled people in Canada are kept below the poverty line. They know it’s impossible for us to survive without help.

So when one of their own became disabled - they ponied up

The rest of us who don’t have a bunch of financially secure government colleagues to give us money?

We’re left to beg for scraps. To spend our days suffering, stressing and defending our existence to friends and family

We’re left relying on mutual aid from a community of other disabled people - most of whom are struggling themselves.

Or relying on abusive family/partners who treat us badly in exchange for “helping”

We’re stripped of our autonomy and agency by punitive policies that make it so we can’t earn any extra money. We can’t marry without losing benefits. They try and force us to become “someone else’s problem”

All these politicians who donated could choose to lobby for a universal basic income. Or to make the Canada disability benefit large enough to lift us out of poverty.

They could remove barriers to support and strike down punitive rules that keep us from getting ahead

They could admit that we have a problem with lack of support that extends to almost ALL disabled people in this country.

There was nothing unique about their colleague. Disability and homelessness can happen to anyone.

The only thing unique about this situation is that he was able to raise so much money so quickly.

He had connections with deep pockets. That’s all that separates him from many of us facing medically assisted death or homelessness ourselves

When we beg you to protect your health - this is why.

Too many people think disability is a vacation and some will even say how “lucky” we are.

They don’t realize how impossible it is to survive. How degrading it is to beg for help. How exhausting our existence is

If you don’t have a wealthy spouse or family, if you’re not independently wealthy yourself, permanent disability will wreck your finances in the blink of an eye.

Being sick is expensive - and we are not given the necessary support

It doesn’t have to be like this. If every person who donated to this campaign stood up and demanded better for disabled people across the country - we might be able to see real change.

They won’t - because we don’t matter

Please remember this the next time you’re scolding someone for needing help. Or telling them that they must be wrong, missing something and/or “not trying hard enough”.

Disabled people are the strongest people I know. We fight every day for ourselves & each other

It’s the system that’s the problem. It’s people in our lives who CAN help and choose not to because they blame us for our illnesses.

It’s systemic ableism that reinforces the notion we’re “better off dead.”

We deserve better. Many of us are only alive because of the kindness of others within the community who step up and help.

Start demanding accountability from politicians. From the wealthy among us.

Start helping us find a sustainable way to survive and thrive.

People make insensitive comments about disability ALL the time. Implying we’re “lucky” that we don’t have to work, that they wish they could “lay around” etc.

They don’t understand the “crip tax”.

It’s expensive being chronically ill. And no one teaches you HOW to cope.

Even if you’re fortunate to have good insurance and/or live somewhere with universal healthcare (like Canada)… the costs add up quick.

Take Canada for example - seeing a doctor is covered - medications, dental and vision aren’t.

If you have complex chronic illness - prescription costs alone can quickly spiral out of control.

Even if you have private coverage - many things aren’t covered. Almost half of what I take wouldn’t be covered by insurance - even with specialist prescription.

Other costs people don’t consider:

💰 Special diet (mine is incredibly restrictive)

💰 Medical and first aid supplies, home healthcare supplies etc

💰 Delivery, homecare, cleaning services, transportation, mobility aids.

If you have MCAS and/or Long Covid or are covid cautious … you can add a whole bunch more expenses to the list:

💰Air purifiers
💰Specialized body & oral care products
💰MCAS safe cleaning products
💰Respirators
💰Rapid tests

The bottom line is being disabled is expensive. Losing your autonomy and independence costs money.

Juggling everything we need to stay alive and maintain a baseline while also trying to ensure we keep a roof over our heads is a full time job.

As if that wasn’t enough - we also have to chase down doctors, follow up on tests, deal with medical gaslighting, covid risk in hospitals, HCWs who won’t mask etc. We do this while suffering the pain of being abandoned by family, friends & society.

It’s not lucky. It’s hard.

There’s other costs people never even consider - like the cost of relying on delivery services that more often than not get it wrong.

In my case - my diet is so restrictive that if a shopper brings the wrong item - it’s going to go to waste.

When you only have about ten safe foods and your delivery screws up five of them - you’re either going to go hungry for a week OR you have to place another order.

But orders have minimum spends and you have to tip a shopper twice. That adds up FAST.

I can’t tell you how much I miss being able to just pop to the store and get my own groceries. Grab a single ingredient without having to meet a minimum spend.

Many non disabled people see grocery shopping as a chore - I see it as a luxury I no longer have.

These are the types of issues you have to deal with when you become disabled that NO ONE teaches you about. 1/2 🧵
