Cooking this morning, following six weekends of intensive #flashfiction writing for Weekend Warrior with other #Codexian folks, I came across the natural sea salt, as I needed to salt the cut-up eggplant. It occurred to me, what would "unnatural sea salt" be? I'm imagining eldritch cosmic horrors emerging from a cylindrical container in the kitchen corner.

This idea is sufficiently stupid that I might try getting #ChatGpt to write the story for me, hoping for unintentional humor.

And one more great 2022 story from a #Codexian. @slhuang wrote this one in the style of a journalist--think The Atlantic or Rolling Stone--and managed to rope in a lot of real stuff about AI, complete with hyperlinks. The story you think you're reading changes into a very different one. Loved it. #WritersOfMastodon #AuthorsOfMastodon #Writers #AmReading #AmReadingScienceFiction #AmReadingSciFi

Still catching up on #Codexian 2022 #fiction, this one by @divyastweets is a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. It had some very clever twists that I enjoyed. #WritersOfMastodon #AuthorsOfMastodon #AmReading #WritingCommunity #Writers

Two Hands, Wrapped in Gold - Uncanny Magazine

My parents taught me to lie as soon as I could speak. Before I knew the meaning of the words, before I understood heat or fire, and long before I felt the pain of singed flesh, I learned to tell strangers that I burned myself by grasping a hot iron pot. Once a day, my […]

More reading of #Codexian 2022 output, "A Dream of Electric Mothers" by Wole Talabi, in the Africa Risen anthology, is a very cool take on the uploading of consciousnesses set amidst rising conflict between two far-future nations roughly corresponding to Benin and Nigeria. The resolution of the interior arc was my favorite part. Available as a .pdf for SFWA members on the SFWA site. #WritersOfMastodon #AuthorsOfMastodon #WritingCommunity #Afrofuturism #AmReadingSciFi #AmReadingScienceFiction
Getting toward the end of my in-box full of #shortstories written by a #Codexian in 2022. I liked this one by @michaelhaynes a lot. A feel-good story about a magical guitar that went places I never expected it to. Enjoy! #AuthorsOfMastodon #WritersOfMastodon #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #fantasy https://www.havenspec.com/carolina

A 48-hour #flashfiction contest posts to the Codex loop. The prompt will drop at 10 am the same day that the Weekend Warrior Week #2 prompt posts at 9 pm. Yeah, right. I can't do both. I work today. But the prompt entices. It's a great prompt. I get home, write furiously, and at 8:45 pm, I am one read-through tomorrow morning from submitting. Thirteen more minutes until I check the Codex loop. Boo-yah! #Codexian #WritersOfMastodon #AuthorsOfMastodon #Writing #WritingCommunity #WritingLife
And that's one more #shortstory with all critique incorporated, polished up, and out the door to a market before this year's Codex Weekend Warrior flash fiction competition consumes most of my writing time for the next seven weeks. #Codexian #AmWriting #AmWritingSciFi #AmWritingScienceFiction #WritersOfMastodon #AuthorsOfMastodon #WritingLife #WritersLife #WritingCommunity #AmSubmitting

I'd seen this #shortstory from a fellow #Codexian in draft form in a Codex contest. Yeah, I was the one who came in from another division, voted it 10/10, and told the others they were crazy for not loving this one. Absolutely hysterical. I could hear Laser Squid's booming voice in my head as I read it. #AmReading #AuthorsOfMastodon #WritersOfMastodon

Escape Pod 850: Laser Squid Goes House Hunting

This one has everything on your checklist." I held open the front door of the four-bedroom colonial. It wasn't quite big enough for my client, who left greasy marks on the doorframe as she squeezed…

Excellent #shortstory by Evan Marcroft in the May/June 2022 issue of Asimov's: "Coyoteland." First encountered it on the crit loop. Strongly recommended. Unfortunately, only accessible to #Codexian s or Asimov's subscribers. Like an updated version of Zelazny's Damnation Alley, but with the trip being in the opposite direction. #dystopia #AmReadingScifi #Amreading #WritersofMastodon #AuthorsOfMastodon
Wow! This story is by a #Codexian keeping their identity secret. My suspicion is that they are a scientist who doesn't want protestors at their door. Their pen-name is part of the sequence of a #CRISPR variant. And the details of the procedure that undergird the story definitely sound like someone who has done some of these techniques. (PhD biochemist here; I know of what I speak). This story is angry, angry at the denial of women's body autonomy. Read it. Get angry. https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/the-crispr-cookbook-a-guide-to-biohacking-your-own-abortion-in-a-post-roe-world/
The CRISPR Cookbook: A Guide to Biohacking Your Own Abortion in a Post-Roe World - Lightspeed Magazine

If you’re reading this---on some godforsaken imageboard, or dog-eared book page, or in encrypted base pairs sequenced off 3D-printed oligos---you’re probably grappling with a pretty tough decision right now. Breathe. I’m not judging you. I know how it goes. You tried your best but nothing’s infallible, or you slipped up one night, or he just straight-up went, your biological clock’s ticking, and hacked your birth control, knowing once it happens you won’t have a choice. The second his sperm enters your egg, he’s done, back to his star-studded career cranking out Science and Cell papers.
