After we screened #CharlieChaplin 's Modern Times I can't stop thinking about this movie.
It's a silent movie from 1936. It kind of exists outside of time.
You don't really think about it til you really see it, but the world of the 30's was already not the world of the 20's.
Here's a fairly trivial example, from one of the movie's most famous scenes.
Here's Charlie and Paulette Goddard walking off down a road (as one of our panelists pointed out, although everyone assumes they're "walking off into the sunset", it's actually dawn), and it's a fairly modern road. It's smoothly paved and even has a stripe down the middle. It's probably a WPA project.
In silent-era silent movies, country roads aren't paved!
This shot was filmed in Santa Clarita, btw, and locals are working to put up a historical marker.
