The Scottish Commissioners who negotiated the Treaty of Union were all appointed by London. #Lockhart of #Carnwath was the only one opposed to it. When he got into Westminster he uncovered the intimidation and bribery that had gone on, and tried to get the Act of Union repealed.

His memoirs could have got him killed when they leaked. He did time in jail for fomenting violence and died from injuries sustained in a duel.
