#smithay is the #rust #wayland library of choice for #compositor creators. Its development is financed via US corp investment and community. I would want to add European institutional investment in one dev position, so we have some local know-how for this critical new tech. Thinking e.g. applying to @sovtechfund and hiring an engineer to fill the role.
Who can help implement? Maybe @fsfeberlin is a good starting point, or @OSBA, @lag_netzpolitik_berlin ?

Following discussions from the 2025 Linux Maintainer Summit, merged overnight for the Linux 6.19 kernel is documentation concerning the Linux kernel project's continuity in the event that Linus Torvalds' official Git repository were to disappear or otherwise be inaccessible for continuing the upstream development of the Linux kernel.

I`ve seen some new discussion how to arrange windows in #GNOME
First I've recently seen mentions on mosaic layout drafted by Thomas Bernhard https://blogs.gnome.org/tbernard/2023/07/26/rethinking-window-management/
Second there's an implementation of it now. https://github.com/CleoMenezesJr/MosaicWM
This reminded me about minimizing windows or the lack of it by default. You can hide a window, but as soon as you alt-tab it's back on the menu. I'm accustomed to the behavior, although it's not ideal.
What if we had a "put into background" button instead of minimize? Windows are moved to the lowest layer right above the background. They are shown in overview less prominent and you cannot alt-tab to them. You have to explicitly select it to get focus and in front.
Wonder whether there's an #extension already?

Window management is one of those areas I'm fascinated with because even after 50 years, nobody's fully cracked it yet. Ever since the dawn of time we've relied on the window metaphor as the primary way of multitasking on the desktop. In this metaphor, each app can spawn one or more rectangular windows, which are...

Very interesting table showing which #Wayland compositor supports which Wayland protocols. I was surprised to see that #gnome's #mutter has implemented substantially fewer protocols than #KDE's #KWin, and also #Sway, #Cosmic, #Hyprland, #Niri, #Labwc, #Wayfire, #Tray, and #Treeland. I am particularly surprised, because the Wayland experience in Gnome is mostly flawless and smooth.
