The Shrouds (David Cronenberg, 2024) A very calm film about death, grief, bodies and desire. At times, it feels distant, but there's a genuine emotional core here, also about shutting your body off from eroticism, the remembrance of desire. Thought-provoking ideas, as per usual with #Cronenberg, that sometimes border on the taboo. I do admire his honesty and fearlessness. In the end, there's no one like Cronenberg.

Only true lovers will understand. Quite different from what I expected from the trailer (I guess a slow-burning horror mystery.) A calm film about grief, death and technology...and horniness. In a way, it rebuilds some of the ideas from Consumed, in a slightly more acceptable manner (you still can go much farther in literature.) Inescapably, there's a real and very honest sadness here, given Cronenberg's personal life, but the film does feel like a vessel for thought-provoking ideas. Thinking back, I don't think Cronenberg really is a great finisher, often opting for a circular closing. Here, he chooses to go

After Hours (Martin Scorsese, 1985) 4K Restoration at the cinema. An unusual film for #Scorsese, a surreal farce that strongly echoes Buñuel and Kafka. A strange, circular dream in the Old New York full of attractive but strange women who turn on the hapless office worker, Paul (played with the right ambivalence by Griffin Dunne.) Great, nervous cinematography that gives the film its unique feel.

A ★★★★ review of After Hours (1985)

Watched this once on tv in the 1980s and was mesmerised by this chaotic nighttime tale. Always thought this was Scorsese having a valiant go at Buñuel surrealism. Finally watched the 4K restoration at the cinema. I still like it a lot, Griffin Dunne's transformation is superb, as are the nervous cinematography and editing. But I think it has become slightly lightweight after seeing so many great and weird Old New York films that dig deeper into the city's old and dark mysteries. As a farcical Noo Yawk Ulysses full of strange women, it still works wonders and remains consistently

Was off seeing A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's revenge at Cineworld tonight. Haven't seen it since the late 80's.

I don't think it works at all as an Elm Street film. It certainly isn't scary.

But had it been about a different character and not Freddy, I think it might have worked much better.

SPACE ADVENTURE コブラ (Osamu Dezaki, 1982) Film version of the space opera manga and animation series. Can be watched as a stand alone. It has this typical tragic storyline that is characteristic of anime from that era. But the main attraction is the artwork, which is dreamy and filled with clever compositions. Also features two very Daft Punk-like scenes of a robot playing the organ and a superb club scene. #CinemaMastodon #anime #film

A ★★★ review of Space Adventure Cobra: The Movie (1982)

Supersingly arty space opera animation. The story itself is your typical planet-hopping adventure with the tragic edge one can expect from Japanese anime of that era. But the pleasure is strictly aesthetic; beautiful mirror effects, colourful electronics, flares and large-breasted women. Also features a robot playing a futuristic organ, so Daft Punk probably have seen this, and perhaps the greatest club scene ever.

The Phoenician Scheme (Wes Anderson, 2025) Was very close to skipping this one, after all, Anderson has been chugging out these agreeable, mediocre films for a while now. And my suspicion turned out to be true. I love the 1950s Great Works in the East aesthetic and Del Toro is pretty good too, but that's about it. Surprisingly light on humour and I'm bored with his father complex. #film #CinemaMastodon

During the first evening in their new apartment, a couple watches their neighbours having sex. A ★★ review of The Voyeurs (2021)

Bro, you shouldn´t have slept on your fine woman. I was perhaps naively hoping for something a bit more arty, a bit more Cronenberg even (although that eye check scene comes close). It's a film that's hard to do right and in an original way, Rear Window just casts a gigantic shadow. Nevertheless, it's an entertaining watch, a bit silly and convoluted with A Big Twist that you have to roll with. Filmed in a slick, hyperreal manner that will probably be seen as the epitome of '20s cinema in a couple of decades.

An excellent spy thriller in the style of Ludlum, Bagley, or le Carré. Some of the tradecraft is a bit ‘can they actually do that with modern tech‽” but you suspend disbelief because it flows well.

Rami Malek isn’t my favourite actor, but he’s very believable here as a CIA analyst who’s biting off far more than he can chew, determined though he may be.

Jon Bernthal is, as always, perfectly relaxed and inhabits his character as though he’s played him for decades. He can do so much with so little, it’s embarrassing to other actors’ skill level.

Perfect fare to end my week with.
