Byland is singer and multi-instrumentalist Alie Byland, at least for practical purposes, though officially it is also the name of the duo she has formed with her husband, lyricist, and producer Jack Byland. Her music is strongly folk-centric, whether she is on an acoustic instrument, putting out heartfelt ballads, or has a band supporting her and adding a mostly muted rock structure to her songs. She favors a gentle sound laid out in a wide scope cinematic feel that ebbs and flows to create a dramatic tension, sometimes subtle, sometimes grand.
