… and we're in business! 🤸

Two years ago I sowed some seeds from Ivy Broomrape (Orobanche hederae) on a public space with a lot of Common Ivy. Usually they only take one year from sowing to blooming, but I didn't see any last year so I thought none of the seeds had found a host. Then today as I was passing by I noticed not one, but five withered and dry inflorescences, so it seems my guerilla gardening was successful after all. 🙌

@cohanf LOL, I've done the same with #Tulipa sprengeri (because Tulipa tarda seems to be able to propagate itself that way) — with nothing to show for it so far.

I didn't know the #Castilleja until now. Such beautiful plants. Do you know the species of the one you've been sowing?

I notice that Castilleja is in the #Broomrape family. I've had success with Ivy-Broomrape, #Orobanche hederae, that is now growing on the Ivy that is covering a long wall. But Castilleja seems to have chlorophyll and everything, so it's not a parasite like its cousin, the Ivy-Broomrape, is it?

One flower cancer root also known as the ghost pipe or naked broomrape, orobanche uniflora. There is no chlorophyll in this plant, hence no green leaves. The plant is parasitic, living entirely of the host plants root system. In every state except Hawaii. And listed as a noxious weed in most of them.
