Lilacs and Butterflies: June in Alberta

PeerTube

Probably our largest + flashiest #Butterfly Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Papilio canadensis they visit all sorts of flowers from native Honeysuckles to Dandelions but *love* Lilacs. Easiest to get photos on this since they're really dug in (still move a lot + the flowers on this one are very high) short video YouTube link Spectra to follow

Hey @enriquericos have you seen Dept. Q on #Netflix? they called it #TartanNoir (takes place in #Scotland ..lol) many familiar elements: talented but rather off the rails detective with an odd team, stuck in the basement to solve cold cases.... *but* very well done, with some unexpected elements as well. There are shows that I *like* and there are shows that I stay up later than I intended to continue watching- this is one of those..lol #tv #entertainment
I thought yesterday- I better appreciate this wonderful clear air as surely with so many fires in the western provinces - including quite far north in Alberta- the smoke will surely be arriving here when the wind is from the right direction-- sure enough this morning I got a first whiff....
2-Huge numbers of #dragonflies and other cool #critters were out, and I followed them around taking #photos and also found some favourite #Wildflowers in spots on the farm I wasn't expecting them. Here's just one of the kinds of dragonflies and a Canada Violet /Viola Canadensis the last of 4 species to flower on the farm/acreage (other 3 still going) More to come and there will be more critters and #flowers on my #iNat page #insects #nature #inverts #BloomScrolling
1-As we move into summer, work returns to full craziness mode..lol I work Saturday/Sunday, so I mostly take it easy Monday. In late afternoon I had a lovely #SlowWalk on the acreage +farm. Strong winds + a bit of rain over the weekend knocked down a lot of the fluffy seed pods from poplar trees, so the air was clearer than it has been, it was pleasantly cool around 17C/63F warmer in sunny spots, cooler in shade and the strong breeze. #Alberta #landscape #nature #CountryLiving #Canada #GetOutside
Many serious wildfires in Western Canada, lots of evacuations, loss of properties, no doubt air quality problems will be spreading far and wide with the smoke.
And yet-- Drill Baby Drill! let's build more pipelines! Short term profit (conveniently ignoring all the financial loss from the climate disruption!) is still the only metric people seem to understand 😞

A common local shrub/small tree, in the rose family as so many temperate/northern fruits are- Amelanchier alnifolia Saskatoon Fruits are similar to blueberries, but more violet and much tastier 😉 many years, though, I don't get to taste many as the #birds love them too, and often eat them just before what we'd consider peak ripeness!

This is an odd one, and I'm going to cross post in a couple of places in the hopes that someone may see it who knows what it is! I'm assuming some sort of pupa, most likely moth? It looks as though it was hung there in that little wooly sock, but I imagine it is more likely that it was fully enclosed in a wooly cocoon, and either has started to emerge or some critter or weather has removed part of the cocoon? grass/sedge wetland

What season is it? Why, #dandelion season, of course!
