A recent breakthrough by researchers led by Prof. Li Jiayang from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences offers new hope in the battle against parasitic weeds that cause global agricultural losses exceeding $10 billion annually.

@cohanf LOL, I've done the same with #Tulipa sprengeri (because Tulipa tarda seems to be able to propagate itself that way) — with nothing to show for it so far.

I didn't know the #Castilleja until now. Such beautiful plants. Do you know the species of the one you've been sowing?

I notice that Castilleja is in the #Broomrape family. I've had success with Ivy-Broomrape, #Orobanche hederae, that is now growing on the Ivy that is covering a long wall. But Castilleja seems to have chlorophyll and everything, so it's not a parasite like its cousin, the Ivy-Broomrape, is it?

De toda la variedad de plantas parásitas que tenemos en la Península, los orobanches son seguramente las más conocidas.
Se encuentran frecuentemente en bordes de caminos, normalmente en grupos de varias espigas emergiendo del suelo. Dado que se alimentan de la savia de otras plantas, no necesitan fabricar la suya propia, por lo que carecen de hojas y de clorofila; de ahí sus colores rojizos o amarillentos.
Las plantas que les sirven de hospedantes, según "Flora iberica", son bastante diversas: labiadas, conpuestas, umbelíferas, leguminosas, dedaleras...
Creo que la especie de ls foto en concreto es Orobanche austrohispanica, pero podría equivocarme.
