#UN peacekeeping mission in “higher five-figure range” needed to enforce a ceasefire in #Ukraine, Gen. #Robert_Brieger, Chairman of the #European Union Military Committee, told #German media Welt.

He thinks that troops from the #Global_South and the #Caucasus could also be involved, alongside #Europeans.

#Brieger also called for a “robust mandate” for any peacekeepers in #Ukraine to be effective – such as the right to enforce the armistice with the use of weapons and air support.

#Europe may be beefing up its defenses to stare down a growing threat from #Russia, but the #EU's top military body is getting another neutral-country general as chair.

#Ireland confirmed Wednesday that Lieutenant General Seán #Clancy was elected to head the European Union Military Committee (#EUMC). He replaces #Austria’s General Robert #Brieger, who also comes from a neutral country.
