A Palestinian beer is set to go on sale in British stores despite border checks and a distance of some 2,500 miles from the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Taybeh Brewing Co. has faced numerous challenges including decades of conflict and water shortages on the way to the sales beginning Wednesday. Business has suffered since the recent outbreak of war in the region. Scottish company Brewgooder has collaborated with Taybeh to create a beer called Sun & Stone. The lager will be available in Co-op's 1,600 U.K. stores. Proceeds will support charities in Taybeh and aid efforts in Gaza.
Coâop to stock Palestinian lager in UK stores after Israeli produce boycott
The launch of the SunâŻ&âŻStone lager comes just weeks after Coâop members voted to end trade with Israeli businesses â a decision that saw the retailer add Israel to a boycott list alongside Russia, Iran and Syria. The move has drawn both praise and criticism, with supporters citing âmoral courageâ and opponents, including senior politicians and the Board of Deputies of British Jews, warning it would not advance peace in the Middle East.
Brewing under pressure
Founded in 1994 in the village of Taybeh, near Ramallah, Taybeh Brewing is regarded as the first microbrewery in the Middle East. It is now run by MadeesâŻKhoury â the regionâs first and only female brewmaster â and her brother Canaan. The business has faced repeated challenges under Israeli occupation, including checkpoint delays, customs restrictions, water shortages and what the owners describe as escalating settler attacks.
MsâŻKhoury said the brewery had âno choice but to keep goingâ despite what she called the worst conditions in decades. She claimed recent incidents included cars being set alight, threats sprayâpainted on buildings, and damage to the spring supplying most of the villageâs water.
âThings are getting worse, but weâre still here, still making beer,â she said. âOur brewery provides jobs and muchâneeded distraction. It tells a story â it shows a side of Palestine that people do not always see.â
Brewed in Scotland
Because of export restrictions and rising costs, SunâŻ&âŻStone will be brewed and bottled in Scotland by Brewgooder, working to Taybehâs recipe. Brewgooder coâfounder JamesâŻHughes said he was âmoved by their resilienceâ and saw the collaboration as a way to share âa perspective of Palestine that is not often seenâ while supporting humanitarian aid.
The beerâs name reflects the West Bankâs warm climate and rocky terrain. All proceeds from UK sales will go to Taybehâs local community and to the Disasters Emergency Committee, which funds relief work in conflictâaffected areas including Gaza.
Coâopâs stance
Coâop chair DebbieâŻWhite said the tieâup was in line with the mutualâs âlongâstanding legacy of doing the right thing, supporting Fairtrade and championing ethical sourcingâ. PaulâŻGerrard, the groupâs director of campaigns, public affairs and policy, said the initiative would âsupport economic stabilityâ and provide âessential funds to those who need it mostâ.
The beer will be available in Coâop stores from 10âŻSeptember and can also be ordered via Brewgooderâs website.
