Tour de Force is an album by Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete, released in 1963 through Fantasy Records.

Review by Richie Unterberger

Sete led a trio on this mid-1963 date, backed by Fred Schrieber on bass and John Rae on drums. It tilts a little to the mellower, more sentimental side than more driving sessions such as the one he did the previous year for Bossa Nova. It's still quality by-the-fire jazz bossa nova music, Sete's playing a lesson in both skill and discreet economy. While he wrote three of the ten songs, his repertoire of cover selections is fairly wide ranging, taking in "Moon River," Dizzy Gillespie's "Tour de Force," and, as a special highlight, his version of Isaac Albeinz's "Asturias," the mournful flamenco-influenced song familiar to any student of Spanish-style guitar. There's also a samba that Luiz Bonfa had a hand in writing ("Sambe de Orfeu")...

Travessuras Do Bola 7 by Bola 7 E Seu Conjunto aka Bola Sete, released on Odeon in 1958.

Biography by Alvaro Neder

Bola Sete was a Brazilian guitarist and composer. His unique, highly improvisational style offered an approach that wed Brazilian styles to flamenco, classical, jazz, American folk, bossa nova, and pop. Sete cut half-a-dozen albums for Odeon before leaving Brazil in 1959, including Aqui Está O Bola Sete (1957) and Ritmolândia (1959). He met Dizzy Gillespie while playing at a Sheraton lounge one evening and promptly joined the trumpeter's band. In 1962, he issued his American debut, Bossa Nova, for Fantasy.

Carnival In Rio by Bola Sete, released on Puchito in 1958.

Incredible! This early album by Bola Sete shows a completely different side of the Brazilian guitarist than later records. The feeling of the album is very festive -- in keeping with the carnival theme -- and Sete plays an electric guitar quite frenetically, jamming away in a fast style that's equally compelling as his mellower work from the 70s. Titles include "Chiquito", "Coco Baturite", "Caravana", "Mulher Rendeira", "Uno A Cero", and "Nino Grande". - Dusty Groove

É A Bola Da Vez by Bola 7 aka Bola Sete, released on Odeon in 1959.

Beatriz Miranda wrote for the Guardian:

"San Francisco, early 1962. For Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete – who would have turned 100 last month – a night would hardly go by without a gig in the Tudor Room of the Sheraton Palace hotel. Bossa nova, seen as a classy background music in hotel dining rooms, was in high demand – but hired to play at cocktail hour, Sete would often go ignored by the audience of thirsty diners. Things changed when trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie recognised Sete and his guitar, the pair having met in Rio de Janeiro a few years earlier.

Gillespie was astonished, so much so that he would return to the Tudor Room with pianist Lalo Schifrin to witness what this little-known musician was capable of. “He was sending a message. It was a message very intense,” Schifrin later said..."

Ended Thursday and welcomed Friday after a walk with Vince Guaraldi, Bola Sete and Friends (stylized as Vince Guaraldi \ Bola Sete \ and Friends) is a collaboration between pianist Vince Guaraldi and guitarist Bola Sete released in January 1964 by Fantasy Records. It was Guaraldi's fourth studio album and the first of three studio collaborations with Sete.

Guaraldi historian and author Derrick Bang offered equal praise, stating that Guaraldi and Sete represented "the perfect musical marriage," adding that Vince Guaraldi, Bola Sete and Friends is "most consistent" of their three album collaborations.

Cashbox cited the album as a Jazz Pick: "Here's a delightful musical marriage spotlighting the distinctive musical talents of Bola Sete and Vince Guaraldi ...
