The insults target her appearance, religion, sexual orientation, and beliefs and are particularly extreme. They are all the more violent considering that Barbara Butch’s fight is to bring people together through music, to create inclusive festivities for all, and to celebrate the power of the love that unites us. To attack Barbara Butch’s appearance is to attack all fat people. To attack Barbara’s religion is to attack all Jewish people. To attack Barbara’s sexual orientation is to attack all queer people. And last, to attack Barbara Butch’s work is to attack a societal project aimed at inclusion. We, queer, fat, Jewish individuals and feminist activists for an inclusive society, call for resistance. Faced with this hatred, we reiterate our love and our unwavering support for Barbara and her work. We vehemently decry the odious assaults she has been the victim of and call on politicians to take responsibility for curbing cyberbullying and supporting victims. On August 25th, Barbara Butch exemplified this resilience by proudly carrying the Paralympic flame at the Rock en Seine festival, demonstrating that she will not be intimidated and will continue to champion diversity with dignity and courage. Because whilst your hatred might be endemic, our resistance, commitment, and fight for a better world are systemic.
