I spent a half an hour this morning picking up single use plastic and styrofoam and other materials such as glass and rubber items. I do this once or twice a month on this section of Atlantic shoreline in the Florida Keys. I could have spent 5 hours and still not have gotten it all. Plastic bottles and bottle caps, styrofoam of various sizes, shoes, toothbrushes, rope, hoses etc. Millions of years from now, long after humans have killed themselves off, I hope that Mother Earth may be restored. Yes, ban the plastic garbage bags holding this stuff too.

‘Outraged that some plastic you send for recycling ends up being burned? Don’t be’

An interesting perspective, worth reading.

Doesn’t make me hate plastic packaging or the supermarkets that use it any less.

Nearly all of our soft plastic waste is associated with food. We still need to attack the source.

Outraged that some plastic you send for recycling ends up being burned? Don’t be

Recycling is, by its nature, complicated. The imperfections in the process don’t mean the whole system is a con, says podcaster James Piper

‘Most soft plastic collected for recycling is burned, campaigners say’

Damn. I sincerely hope Co-Op do better than Tesco and Sainsbury’s appear to, because that’s where we diligently take our soft plastic for recycling.

We do everything we can to reduce the amount coming through the door, but the supermarkets just aren’t helping near enough.

We need to #bansingleuseplastic for health and the #environment’s sake.

This ePetition just came through the local networks. I really appreciate young people continuing to work towards meaningful environmental policy and support them whenever I can. It's one of the few avenues of hope left.

“Recycling campaigns and greenwashing help plastic producers hide these facts from consumers. They make it harder for buyers to make smart and eco-friendly choices and for lawmakers to create fair and informed regulations.”

Explosive new report accuses major corporations of lying for decades: 'It's clearly fraud they're engaged in'

Major plastic producers have known that recycling isn't a good solution for more than 30 years — they just lied about it.

Hardly any plastics can be truly recycled, and producers have known for decades: Report

Plastics producers have promoted recycling their products as an environmental solution for decades despite firsthand knowledge that it was not feasible, according to a report published Thursday. More than 99 percent of plastics are produced using fossil fuels, and of these, the vast majority cannot be “recycled” in the sense of being processed and turned into entirely…

Am I alone in being completely unsurprised by any of this?

Of course they knew. But free market capitalism doesn’t care about waste. It’s external to the money flow model. It only cares about capital and there were (arguably still are) no market incentives to fix the waste problem. So they haven’t.
