If you're making Rome analogies, we're not in the part where the Roman empire falls, painfully and spastically, over a few centuries. We're in the part where the Roman Republic ends, because of greed and ambition by a few very powerful people willing to fuck over their entire country for personal gain. Big spoiler: Very soon after Caesar made himself into a king, the Senate and all other democratic and quasi-democratic bodies pretty much stopped having any power to resist the king's bullshit.

Then this shit went on for like a thousand more years.

It was during a lesson on immigration where we were doing family trees and looking up names on the then-new Ellis Island search site to see if anyone we recognized was listed.
