Lafayette’s bus tracking system updated and back online
Lafayette Transit System’s real-time bus tracking software is updated and back online after a nearly six-year hiatus.
Riders can now see where and how full the bus is, using GPS-enabled tracking in the online application Ride Lafayette. The administration also encouraged riders to sign up for LafayetteNOW to receive updates on bus closures or route changes.
Since the pandemic, Lafayette has had as few as three bus drivers out of the twenty budgeted, and even with driver numbers in the teens, buses often run one per hour loop. Without tracking, riders were left waiting hours for their bus, or leaving home hours early to ensure they did not miss the bus whenever it did arrive.

While tracking will not add drivers and buses onto routes, riders will now be able to follow their bus on its route and plan accordingly, alleviating some of the inconvenience of the up to one-hour-long waits that had become commonplace.
Mayor-President Monqiue Boulet’s administration has focused on transportation needs in her year and a half in office so far, and is aiming to introduce microbusing as part of her proposed budget. The practice, which has become more popular across the country, usually uses scheduled van pick-ups for riders to save time.
