ralenfor my pretty long foss distro dailydriving, i have tried all kinds of linux distros, haiku, redoxos, reactos a bit, but bsd system always missed my attention
so today i decided to change that: by testing freebsd for the first time!
the installer is pretty simple, if you can install a linux distro - it will be easy too
wayland doesnt support runhing in the qemu vm (hyprland is in the repos tho), so i went with cinnamon and software rendering. couldnt make lightdm work tho - at best it launched itself, but failed to start the de, so i used xinit, and it worked fine
to test the linux apps compatibility, i downloaded zen-browser linux version (it doesnt have a bsd version 😢). ofc it didnt run out of the box, and i had to install linux-rl9 compatibility layer, gtk3 and alsa-lib for it, and alsa-oss (freebsd's audio) translator, and it worked quite fast for a 2cpu 4gb ram vm - can play 720p youtube video (with small freezes, but thats ok for vm with software rendering). i dont usually watch videos in my browser - i have mpv for that, so im okay even if youtube will lag on a real hardware if i cant set up hardware video decoding. (mpv works btw, but why shouldnt it)
inspired by the success, i mounted my host filesystem with fuse-sshfs and tried to run factorio... and it just launched... with no sound. after some unsuccessfull attempts to setup pipewire, i just installed linux-rl9-pipewire and set "pipe-wire" in the factorio config, and now i can launch factorio in freebsd with all functions working! isn't it truly a year of a bsd desktop?
next i will try to achieve the same with netbsd
i wont test wine games yet, they reportedly work on all bsds, and i dont have a hw accel in a vm anyway
after testing in vm, i will install some bsd on my nvme to try it natively
freebsd should work ok with my wifi card with wifibox (linux vm with wifi drivers), but netbsd probably wont as it is not supported by this wifibox, so i might want to replace my wifi card in the laptop or use my phone for tethering (worked with haiku, will work here)

One of the things lacking from the FreeBSD installation routine is the easy installation of a full desktop experience, from X11 all the way up to a login manager, desktop environment, and its applications. It seems this might finally change for FreeBSD 15.0, as the FreeBSD Foundation’s Laptop Support and Usability Improvements project is working on adding support for this to bsdinstall, the FreeBSD installer.
