Not being a German speaker, I translated it automatically (Waterfox). This line seems too accurate (for how I’ve received packages): “Smaller (suitable) shipments may be placed in the house mailbox be thrown in.” (translated) 😅

The original German: “Kleinere (passende) Sendungen dürfen in den Hausbriefkasten eingeworfen werden.”

I think the PDF introduced a line break that results in this unusual sentence structure.

Translating it without the line break (on a different device (iOS) with a similar line break translation) results in something sounding much more reasonable: “Smaller (matching) shipments may be dropped into the house mailbox.”

Still, these translations vary quite a bit. Also, this phrase does not pertain to the U.S. as only the United States Postal service uses the mail box for parcel deliveries.

Ich erinnere mich, vor gut einem Jahr von DeepL Texte übersetzen ließ, die ich kaum nachbearbeiten musste.

Heute habe ich von DeepL eine Übersetzung angeboten bekommen, die viele Probleme hatte.

Besonders ärgerlich fand ich die Inkonsistenz: Der Ausdruck “policy document” wurde in drei verschiedene Ausdrücke übersetzt: Grundlagendokument, Richtlinie und Strategiepapier. War es nicht eines der Versprechen, dass #maschinelleÜbersetzung terminologische Konsistenz garantieren würde?

Wenn in einem Text mehrere Übersetzungen abwechselnd gewählt werden, ist der Leser:in nicht mehr klar, dass sich die Autor:in jedes Mal auf dasselbe Ding bezieht.

Lag es vielleicht daran, dass ich mich in der Auswahlbox nicht zwischen “Formal tone” und “Informal Tone” entscheiden konnte und deshalb “Automatic” auswählte? Nein. Jede der drei Einstellungen ergibt eine andere Übersetzung, aber das Problem der Inkonsistenz bleibt.
