MTPlayer ist der Nachfolger meines Programms MediathekView. Damit können Filme der Online-Mediatheken verschiedener Sender (ARD, ZDF, Arte, 3Sat, SWR, BR, …) angesehen oder gespeichert werden. Es verwendet ebenfalls die Filmliste von MediathekView.de. Ich habe das Projekt MediathekView gegründet und jahrelang betrieben. Die Arbeit die über die Pflege des Programms hinaus, weiter nötig war (z.B. die Filmliste aktuell zu halten) war für mich alleine nicht mehr zu leisten. So habe ich mich entschlossen, das Projekt als Community-Projekt weiter laufen zu lassen. Um die Filmliste wird sich seit dem super gekümmert. Ich wurde dort auch nicht mehr gebraucht. So habe ich die Zeit für einen Nachfolger meines Programms, gefunden. Da kein Interesse bestand, den auch als Download mit anzubieten, ist das Projekt P2Tools entstanden. MTPlayer wurde ganz neu mit einem modernem GUI-Toolkit erstellt. Viele Vorschläge die ich von Usern erhalten habe, konnten deswegen damit umgesetzt werden. Es wurde an vielen Stellen verbessert und erweitert.
