Is the “echidnapus” the Rosetta Stone of early mammal evolution?

The chance discovery of a long-forgotten tray of fossils in the collections of the Australian Museum has highlighted a previously unknown “Age of Monotremes” that thrived while dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

The intention is to see what it tells us about the mantle in this region of the Pacific and, in turn, what that can tell us about mantle processes in terrestrial planets.

We published one paper in 2022 (here: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00288306.2022.2108068) and have just come back from another fieldwork session on the island with a bunch more samples!
