Home Tree 2025 – Vimeo

We had to accept the arborists’ decision by our HOA, to remove a damaged and dying ash tree. It was sad, enjoyed since 2016 when we moved in here. A short video tribute, some old shots, some images, video and fair use of brief music clip (Paul McCartney).

The ash tree was destroyed by the Emerald Ash Borer, see more here, a lots of trees in danger of this beetle. See more here: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant-pests-diseases/eab and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1biFq0fKbKo

@donray @the_heruman I was able to take some pictures of what is likely Emerald Ash Borer damage. I'd forgotten there are two trees close by exhibiting this. Both of them have Poison Ivy on them which makes them look a lot greener than they really are😑

Two local ash trees.
The one in the woods has had its crown and branches removed, probably because ash die-back disease was making the tree liable to drop its branches onto passers-by. Bracket fungus, an indication of rotten heartwood, can be seen.
The one on the golf course appears to have been felled long ago leaving a low stump - and then allowed to re-grow. I suppose there may be other explanations for its strange shape?

Wow. This is (a) super interesting in itself, and (b) good news for our ash trees. I've seen so many dying ash trees in my part of England, it breaks my heart. This is very encouraging news and congrats to the people at Kew Gardens and at Queen Mary, good work. Also a really well-written piece, hat tip to author #NatashaWard.

#AshTree update. I went down to the Saco River and positively identified a White Ash tree that might *not* have #EAB (Emerald Ash Borer). It did have a lot of invasive vines choking it out (Oriental Bittersweet being one), so I did my best to cut and remove the vines. The tree also had some sprouty bits emerging. Not sure what that means. I'm wondering if I could safely remove those and get them to root, but I'll leave them alone until I find out. I still have to report the infected Green Ash trees down the street to #MDIFW, and find out what should be done with them (not on our property, but a parcel that's about to be developed). I want to make sure the owners know to how to dispose of them safely without spreading more EAB.
