Archives New Zealand has a great photo-stream on Flickr where they occasionally post items from their collection. I especially like a recently posted photo of the 1961 Christmas Day menu at the Montecillo War Veteran's Home and Hospital in Ōtepoti/Dunedin. Many of the items on offer remind me of the food of my childhood - other than the inclusion of "cigarettes and bottled beer" for "dinner" - i.e. lunch!

"A big push for us is taking archives to the people, and digitisation is the key factor to making that possible. We're essentially democratising access. No matter where you are or who you are, you can access your records - because they belong to New Zealanders. We're just the keepers."

If you have been following along with the scandal at Archives New Zealand, where the new Collections software platform from Swedish firm Axiell, is an unmitigated disaster, you will be pleased to know the a member of the public has developed a much better search tool in their own time. From Vincent O'Malley via Nitter.

It is incredible that a member of the public, working unfunded in their spare time, has very quickly developed a much better search tool, drawing on Collections data, while we are told it will be well into next year to fix the wretched Collections system. https://archway.howison.co.nz/
