Scored two fine tomes at the library this morning, both related to my work-in-progress.

"'New Zealand used to have shoe factories. They were all over the country, until they weren’t. Now, New Zealand-made shoes feels like a distant memory, like carless days, a top-bracket tax rate of 66% and The Video Dispatch. We went from having 95% of our footwear made locally in the late 1980s to only 5% by 2008. These days it’s certainly even less than that."

Is anyone still making shoes in New Zealand?

Locally produced footwear is an endangered species.

"“The plans originally came to the Council as part of the consent process – with the earliest dating back to the No 1 Pumphouse in 1881. ..."
...
In collaboration with Christchurch City Libraries some of the plans in the collection have been digitised, with still more to come.

Search the collection online via ArchivesSpace, explore the digitised plans or learn more at Christchurch City Council Archives : Christchurch City Council."

In the 1920s, New Zealand cities faced a problem and an opportunity: electricity was a growing technological innovation with a clear economic benefit.

Across the country, cities held referendums to establish local power boards, which would take out huge loans to establish ... distribution networks...

... New Zealanders voted overwhelmingly in favour of it, with 85% support nationwide. "

The government’s infrastructure plan points the blame at the government

The National Infrastructure Plan, released today, sets out a vision for a more efficient, affordable future. But is infrastructure minister Chris Bishop willing to accept that he is part of the problem?

#OnThisDay, 20 Dec 1893, around 4,000 women vote in the Māori seats in Aotearoa New Zealand. Photo is from 1908.

Until 1975, electors of Māori descent could only vote in one of the four Māori seats unless they had one Māori and one European parent.

I've been blogging. In this case, a series of posts with some history of the Auckland University College.

Part One: Beginnings.
https://www.shayneparkinson.com/auckland-university/1494/
- How Auckland's college came to be the poor relation of the four University Colleges

Part Two: The Council, the Board, and the Polo Ponies.
https://www.shayneparkinson.com/auckland-university-part-two-the-council-the-board-and-the-polo-ponies/1614/
This one rather got away on me. A wronged mathematician and a team of polo ponies. A fascinating story with a lot of rabbit holes to tempt me from my path.

Part Three: The Site Row.
https://www.shayneparkinson.com/auckland-university-part-three-the-site-row/1652/
The curse of Government House. How Auckland high society did its best to send the College packing, and how Fletchers tried to fill in Hobson Bay without bothering with an engineering report.

Part Four: The University Revisited.
https://www.shayneparkinson.com/auckland-university-part-four-the-university-revisited/1780/
A visit to the University as it looks today, and a short musing on my own small connection with it.

Auckland University - Shayne Parkinson

The University College of Auckland, as this institution was called in the 1920s, plays an important role in Higher Learning, the third book of my “Daisy” series. I’ve put together […]
