Google Play System Update (May 2025) rolls out for Samsung devices

Google Play System Update was a feature that was introduced for devices that ship with Android 10 or newer. It’s mandatory for device manufacturers that plan to release their devices with Android 10 to support Google Play System Updates. As a result, non-Google devices, such as Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets released with Android 10 (One UI 2.1), can receive such updates, too.

These updates don’t require security updates from the manufacturer to work, as Project Mainline modules work independently to give you better experience with Android phones and tablets.

On June 10th, a new Google Play System Update has been pushed to Samsung devices. This update upgrades your Project Mainline modules to the May 1st, 2025 version. This update weighs around 87 MB.

To be able to get this version, follow these steps:

  • Go to your device’s settings
  • Open the security settings
  • Find “Google Play System Update” and tap on it
  • If everything goes OK, you should see the below update dialog:
  • Click on Download and Install, wait for it to download, then reboot your device by clicking on the blue Restart button. The next time your device boots up, the revised update gets installed, so it’s going to take about 3 minutes maximum to install all the updates.

There is no progress bar, so don’t panic if it looks stuck. Your device will eventually boot up. Now, open your settings app and check your Google Play System Update. If everything is well, you should see May 1st, 2025 below the appropriate button.

In case your device didn’t receive the update, wait for a few days, and it will be available shortly.

Stay tuned for the June patch of 2025!

    This is Android 16

Google has started preparing the new logo of Android 16 as they have planned to release this version of Android earlier than the previous Android versions, such as Android 15 that got released to Pixel devices in October. The new logo can be seen in the above picture.

Here’s the comparison of Android 15 and Android 16 logos:

As you can see, the Android 16 logo represents a green planet with the Android bot spinning around it, creating a green trail behind its back. This logo is a curved square with 16 written at the lower right corner and ANDROID written at the middle top. On the other hand, the Android 15 logo is a curved equilateral triangle with an Android bot launching itself to the top in the planet, with 15 written at the bottom of the logo.

Looking at the schedule that you can see below, November is the first month that will get the developer preview.

As you can see, November and December are the months that witness the developer preview of the new Android version, which is usually two previews. Afterwards, from January to April, there will be beta versions released to Google Pixel devices, with platform stability starting from March until the final release. The official release will start after May, in which OEMs like Samsung will receive the Android 16 codebase in order for them to apply their skins on top of the original Android source code.

Your Galaxy 2023 flagships will get AI features soon!

In the world of artificial intelligence (AI), where companies innovate with newly creative features that leverage the usage of AI and where people use such features to do things that weren’t possible in the older days (such as generating articles from just a heading or generating pictures from just a description), Samsung jumped to the AI party with their Samsung Galaxy S24 (base, plus, and Ultra variants). This phone featured various Galaxy AI features, such as removing unwanted objects from photos, adding missing parts, generating a summary from text, and Circle to Search.

This feature set was teased in various Galaxy S24 advertisements in both the digital form (YouTube and so on) and in the televised form (such as television channels). However, things are about to take a nice turn!

Today, March 28th, Samsung will release the Galaxy AI features to their 2023 flagship devices soon. However, this is an update to One UI 6.1, which is currently available in the following devices:

The following Samsung devices will get One UI 6.1 with the Galaxy AI features:

    • Galaxy S23 (base, plus, and Ultra)
    • Galaxy S23 Fan Edition (FE)
    • Galaxy Tab S9
    • Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 5

There may be older devices that will probably get some of the Galaxy AI features, such as the 2022 flagship S22 devices. This is being tested internally, and the list of devices that will get One UI 6.1 with Galaxy AI may change once Samsung finishes testing the AI features on the older devices internally.

Once Samsung confirms the release for older devices, such as the Tab S8 and the Z Fold/Flip 4 devices, we’ll post a follow-up to let you know which device will get One UI 6.1 with AI and which ones will get the same One UI 6.1 without AI.

Side note: Galaxy A55 doesn’t have Galaxy AI bundled with One UI 6.1 that was released with this device, but it has only one AI feature: Advanced AI Image Signal Processing (ISP). It produces stunning low-light images never seen before on the Galaxy A series. In contrast, Galaxy A55 comes with seamless updates, while Galaxy S24 and all older devices don’t unless Samsung releases an update that introduces it, which is unlikely to happen.

Are you excited to use Galaxy AI on your older flagship devices?
