Samsung devices are still stuck in last year’s Google Play System Update

Last year, Google released the Google Play System Update for all devices across all the months, but the issue of getting it up to date started when Samsung’s One UI 8 started rolling out. This has caused users to get stuck in the last update they’ve installed, and those who factory reset the device got stuck in the July 2025 version.

For instance, Galaxy Tab S8 users who updated to One UI 8 and did all the necessary Google Play System Updates, such as our device, got stuck in October 2025, as you can see here:

There were many reports that confirm that users who updated to Android 16 are stuck in either July 2025 or the latest version being applied to their devices, and you can see some of the reports listed here:

One person asked Samsung India via Samsung Members for an inquiry about the Google Play System Update not being updated in Samsung devices, and they said “it is intended behaviour that Google Play system update (GPSU) doesn’t work in the some Samsung Android 15 devices. It is blocked by Samsung’s policy and consultation with Google. The blocked update will be resumed soon at the right time per device.”

There was an article posted online by heise online stating that they have contacted Samsung about the matter, and they responded: “When introducing new devices or major One UI updates, Samsung exclusively deploys software that the company has verified. Samsung has temporarily suspended the distribution of Google updates to avoid potential issues.” This means that it’s a controlled process that makes sure that all Samsung devices perform smoothly, even after Google Play system updates.

It was planned to include the Google Play system update on January 2026, but we have seen some older Samsung devices that got the November 2025 Google Play system update, such as the Galaxy S10, S20, and S21 devices that are not running Android 16. However, those who are running Android 16 are still stuck.

As a result, some people have their Google Play system updates rolled back, and you can see one of the reports here: The Google Play system update rolled back.

We hope that, eventually, Samsung and Google work together to fix this issue, ensuring that Galaxy users be able to update to the latest Google Play System Update. The first GPSU that will land to Android 16 will be explained in a separate article once it gets released.

Google Play System Update (October 2025) rolls out for Samsung devices

Google Play System Update was a feature that was introduced for devices that ship with Android 10 or newer. It’s mandatory for device manufacturers that plan to release their devices with Android 10 to support Google Play System Updates. As a result, non-Google devices, such as Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets released with Android 10 (One UI 2.1), can receive such updates, too.

These updates don’t require security updates from the manufacturer to work, as Project Mainline modules work independently to give you better experience with Android phones and tablets.

On October 28th, a new Google Play System Update has been pushed to Samsung devices. This update upgrades your Project Mainline modules to the October 1st, 2025 version. This update weighs around 49 MB.

To be able to get this version, follow these steps:

  • Go to your device’s settings
  • Open the security settings
  • Find “Google Play System Update” and tap on it
  • If everything goes OK, you should see the below update dialog:
  • Click on Download and Install, wait for it to download, then reboot your device by clicking on the blue Restart button. The next time your device boots up, the revised update gets installed, so it’s going to take about 3 minutes maximum to install all the updates.

There is no progress bar, so don’t panic if it looks stuck. Your device will eventually boot up. Now, open your settings app and check your Google Play System Update. If everything is well, you should see October 1st, 2025 below the appropriate button.

In case your device didn’t receive the update, wait for a few days, and it will be available shortly.

Stay tuned for the November patch of 2025!
