Historians: The level of historical literacy is appalling. I’m going to publish a general readership book.
The Book: “Blood On Your Hands: How Everything Has Always Been F*cked And You Specifically Are Making It Worse”
Well this is the most dystopian shit to ever grace my inbox.
Two weeks at the new job (first post-PhD #altacademia), and there are lots of thoughts. Can’t put them all on here, but perhaps a few:
- This isn’t anything new. I’ve been on LinkedIn for awhile, but wow what a different world of very curated content, strange takes, and uncritical “expert” opinions on everything. Of course good networking and some good advice too if you do it right.
- If you look around, you’d be surprised how much relevant expertise you can find in your PhD. It’s been a bit of a journey learning how to advocate for myself instead of letting imposter syndrome rule.
- So far my experience, and the experience of others I’ve talked to that left academics, is that there’s something really nice about being on a broad team, with people of widely varying domains of expertise, all working toward a practical goal. Sure depending on the academic group, support and motives can vary (I think I was on the better side of things), but it’s no secret that there’s something that feels oppressive, anxiety-inducing, and lonely about the structure.
It’s hard to pin down what it is, but it seems like a combination of, among other things, structured mentorship, roles, boundaries, and some amount of more successful gamification (incentives structure, more attainable goals, more regular feedback).

Digital scholarship happens at the convergence of a range of disciplines, technologies, and communities. The Digital Cultural Studies Cooperative is a community that seeks to explore, celebrate, question, and disrupt these intersections in order to advance an inclusive dialog that spans boundaries and highlights unlikely connections in the field of digital humanities.
